Travel Tip: Vranov, picturesque hidden gem of Southern Moravia

in traveltip •  7 years ago

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I would like to take you to introduce you to another so called hidden gem of the country, the adorable little town of Vranov.

Located in the South Moravia Region of the country close to the Czech-Austraian border, some 20 km outside the historic city of Znojmo, Vranov (officially known as Vranov nad Dyji) is a little town with a population of just about 800 people.

The origin of the town itself probably dates back to the first half of the 14th century but the Vranov Castle, the dominant feature of the town, was built as early as in approximately 1100.

Perched on a forested promontory above the River Dyje (sometimes known as “Thaya” in English), the castle has a very long and interesting history. Over the centuries, it was owned by a number of different noble families and witnessed many notable events. The castle has also been rebuilt several times, which is why you can find architectural features from different eras there. However, it hasn’t changed much since its extensive Baroque reconstruction so the castle is usually categorized as Baroque.

Another thing that Vranov is famous for is the Vranov Dam. Built between 1930 and 1033, the Vranov Dam is one of the largest, cleanest and usually also warmest dams in the country, making it a very popular summer destination for domestic as well as foreign tourists. The area is particularly sought after by hikers and outdoor enthusiasts as it is surrounded by the beautiful, scenic landscape of the Podyji National Park, one of just four national parks of the Czech Republic.

Eveyone has his/her own choice but i love to visit less populous spots more than the dense areas. With a population of about 800 Vranov took my attention to visit this place someday ;)

Awesome! I love small town rich in history and culture. More and more I'm leaning toward spending most of my time this summer, or all of my time in Eastern Europe. I think I'm really going to like this part of the world. Thanks for sharing. I'll be around. -Dan
