So, I accidentally mulched my South hugel bed with acorns this fall. I thought I was using two bags of leaves, but I kinda wasn't... I figured it was meant to be, and embraced it. Now there are #trees taking it over. Guys. I LOVE THIS MISTAKE!!!! Trees growing everywhere in my first hugel bed! I feel so blessed and can't wait to watch them develop.

Trees AND #hugelkultur together. Something about this feels super right... #permaculture #gardening #foodforest #share2steem #steem #oak #maple #hardwood #forest #hardwoodforest #newgrowth #spring #alive

Be blessed.
Be fruitful.
Stay relevant.

Nate.

You have good reason to be happy. Just think of all the biomass, the shade, the birds, the firewood, the timber, the buildings and the furniture, the water management, haha even more acorns (dry em leach em grind them), the pigs, the bacon, the pumas... Sorry, I tend to get carried away when I hear about nature taking over.

Much excite!!!!

I'm getting carried away too. It's sparking dreams of a small tree nursery and a hugelkultur business :)

oh my gosh, that is so beautiful.

Step 1. Screw up
Step 2. Be too lazy to pick up nineteen million acorns

😂😂

Can't wait to see what kind they are. Likely oak, as that's what most trees in our neighborhood are. I forget which neighbor I stole these ones from...

I think it is cool you are going to let them grow and see what happens. Those acorn shells will break down into beautiful mulch.

That's how it works in the forest! Acorns fall all over with leaves and make trees and soil! And what's more, it happens right on top of naturally occurring hugelkultur! Aaaahhhhh!!!!

I'm really excited lol

That's so cool! I accidentally planted pumpkins that way once. I tossed out the guts from a jack-o-lantern into the compost pile and come spring we had pumpkin vines all over. Little baby trees! You must be thrilled!

I fed my punkin seeds to the chooks. I need more though. I've heard they love rustling through punkin patches.

They will rustle through anything! And then tear it to the ground!

I'd be okay with that. I'm gonna plant them their own little garden to play in. We're not big pumpkin eaters, so they can have em :) I've also heard the pumpkins make their yolks super dark.

I haven't heard that one. The accidental pumpkin patch was years before I had chickens. We can't really grow pumpkins here. Not enough sun unless we cut down all the trees, which doesn't seem like a good idea.

Bah ha ha! That's pretty epic! ;)

You're never going to be able to rip those deep roots out once they grab hold. Hope you don't mind that you just created the beginnings of a squirrel forest paradise.

That's a lot of acorns! It is really fun to watch them sprout like that.

Did they really split open on the surface, or was that one you pulled out for display?

Young tree seeds love free draining soil, so I'm sure they'll be dancing through that hugelkultur in no time.

Hahaha I'm going to dig them up and thin them when they're a bit taller. Not too tall though. Don't wanna fight with giant tree roots.

Yeah, they just sprouted right there on the surface! No squirrel business necessary! I guess they really wanna be alive :)
