TREEMAGGEDDON - Sheffield's Tree War

Since 2012 around 6000 healthy mature (and much loved) Street Trees have been butchered by Sheffield City Council (in the North of England) by way of a secret 25 year PFI Highways contract with Amey PLC. Despite much protest to the contrary parts of the secret contract were revealed to contain an actual target of 17,500 trees to be felled. This information was not disclosed in a court case, regarding the efficacy of the 6000 figure, and was denied by elected Councillor's on BBC radio even after it had been revealed! Many people have tried to stop the tree felling by physically getting in the way of the Amey contractors. Amey and the Police have utilised progressively more heavy-handed procedures to 'get the job done'. These include employing a private army of security staff (SIA) and tactical arrests by the police to remove protesters from the scene.
