TREE TUESDAY

Burls from a tree trunk can yield valuable material for custom craftwork. Insect infestation and certain types of mold are the most common causes of this condition.

Burls yield a highly figured wood. It is used for furniture inlays, turnings on a lathe, veneers, wood sculptures and other specialty wood projects.

This burl is growing on a Hard Maple tree. It measures around 52 inches.

In the very near future, maybe this coming spring we will see what this burl has to offer. The figured grain pattern should be spectacular. The burl, along with part of the trunk will be laid on our saw bed and its unique features will be uncovered.

Howdy sir bigsweed! hey that burl looks huge, I didn't know what caused those things before this post. It will be interesting to see what it looks like cut open, very cool.

Yeah, will lay the saw into it next year more than likely. Would have liked to cut this year, but that may be impossible as we are being dumped on as we speak. Must have between 14in. and 16in. already. Will be taking a couple of pictures of this year's first real snow storm when I go outside to start digging out.

Thanks for always dropping a line!

oh my gosh bigsweed, do you have a big snowblower I assume?

Just big enough!
