A few people on their own go to the trouble to buy insurance. But it’s rarely discussed, and it’s onerous to get. You need to shop for it, have extensive medical tests, and follow ups if they find anything, often without any financial help.

Most people assume that somehow employment or the government protects them. But if you can’t work for years at a time, if you don’t have excellent private insurance, which can cost several percent of your gross income, then you can be wiped out. Or causes a crisis for your family.

Having famous people beg for money for a routine medical scenario should be a red flag to us all about how embarrassingly neglected our social situation is with people in need. Help Margot, but then let’s all lobby for government change, better disability insurance through employment and for everyone, perhaps as part of medical, and at the least get the word out that everyone needs to acquire this insurance if they can afford it.
