I am just 2 weeks away from the EBC trek and while I am so excited about this trek now I am also feeling nervous. It is for the first time in my life that I am doing such an adventure solo. Normally I would have some one or the other always accompanying me. This time I had no one to join me, and I could not push anyone, because this is not a leisure trip. I am actually preferring to go solo for this one, because I cannot estimate other person's capabilities and then if there is any issue over there then I also would get stuck up. Anyways for my own-self also, I have prepared as much as possible but still nothing can be guaranteed.
Doing the real thing is going to be completely different then doing all the work outs. In the last few weeks my focus has been on strengthening my core, legs, hands and cardio, so you can say in short the complete me. I can feel the difference with each day, my legs are gaining strength. Now I am able to do 700 steps at a time, with short breaks of 1 or 2 minutes and I am able to do 50 squats. I do the steps and squats on daily basis as that's really helping me build up strength. On alternate days I do an hour of treadmill, and half an hour cycling. An then a daily 15 to 20 minutes of Yoga routines following with deep breathing.
Practically daily almost 2.5 hrs goes into the practice, and I am hoping with all the efforts that I am taking now, the trek will be not exactly easy but not that difficult also. Hubby is feeling tensed about the whole thing now. He keeps telling me the do's and don'ts. He is actually concerned for me, and I can also see that he feels proud about me. Whenever we go for any shopping for the trek, he keeps emphasizing to the store person that I need it because I am going for the EBC trek....hahaha.
As much as one does all the strength training for the trek, the real challenge is the altitude which cannot be practiced to deal with and it has to be dealt with on real time basis. From all the experiences that I have read and heard, this is the one thing that is the most challenging part of the trek, getting acclimatized to the dropping oxygen levels at the height. Oxygen level goes down by almost 50% at 17500 ft so the acclimatization process is the most important one during the trek. One cannot be in a hurry and miss that unless one is a pro and used to the weather conditions of high altitude.
I am happy that I am feeling confident about this trek now with all the preparedness that I have been doing since the last 2 months. I have completed all the gear shopping also for the trek. I have to keep in mind that my total luggage should not exceed more than 10 kgs inclusive of every possible thing that I would need for the trek. It is going to be a minimalist living for the 10 days.
Next Tuesday I leave for Mumbai and then on 5th I leave for Nepal and proceed on the trek. I have to do this for myself, it is a challenge to myself and also something worthy of my life to accomplish. Next month by this time, I will be done with the trek and I will have loads of stories and experiences to share with you all.
