OUR SOCIETY AND DISABILITY

Behold, in a city where we reside
Where gamut of persons take pride
In different specialty and capability
Here, there, people living with disability

Woe, in this city and its clime
With some malady at its prime
Where the special ones
Are left on the line

Its polity is fraught with mundane lodestones
And those living with disability are given
No preference, voice nor tone
Where the reverse could have
Made them a natural cornerstone
Voiceless and vulnerable they are
Not armed even with a monotone

In the theater where they thrive
Away, their cohorts them drive
Rudderless and futureless they are perceived
People harboring them are also I'll perceived

Some aver, they are restricted and inhibited
They can't distinguish their left from right
Insolently goes the discordant noise, they are impaired
And other brutally opinionated insinuations there
Funny, how society even fuel their plight
Painful how the special ones live
At the behest of the society

So many a time, them I come across
In front of a structure, no ramp for them to cross
Clouds of access and assistance they are denied
Always ostracized, alone they bear their cross

Everywhere, everytime every place
Stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination is all they face
Alas, these people are also part of our nation
Is it the massive restriction to education
Or the difficulty encountered in communication
Likewise, the one faced in assimilation
Even denied their right to self-determination
Unknowingly, we engender a horrendous situation

Hello! They are not disabled
They are just living with disability

Hey! Disability is not a tragedy nor punishment for their wrongs
Neither should it be seen as a pestilent prong
Looking to attack more throngs

With the premium presence
Of visual, mobility and hearing aids
Coupled with adequate support
Through grants and aids
Without the absence of our love, care and attention
They'll always attain a sublime level of ascension

Let the government enact vibrant and effective policies
And provide its agents with state-of-the-art facilities

To the coalescent authorities we plead
Let your ministries and agencies take the lead
Individuals and functionaries should not recede
In mediating the plight with disability
Thence, we may experience ability in disability

We need to stop acting with impunity
Because they have equal rights in our community
Not just because they are part of our community
But because they are part of humanity
