Ulog 23: Week In Review & WE HAVE LUFFAS!

in tribesteemup •  6 years ago  (edited)

Lots has been happening on the Golden D Homestead over the last seven days...

  • steemit got a little kick in the booty preventing us from posting, commenting and more- so I took this little hiatus to recover, go to appointments and re-organize ALL my posts
  • I did start posting on Weku- still giving it some thought and hoping it helps to contribute to my overall future plan of financial security one day
  • I opened a SMOKE account (https://smoke.io/@goldendawne) and am loving being able to post here about my cannabis
  • Garden tear up has started
  • We got our 1/4 of a cow in the deep freeze
  • WE HAVE LUFFA GOURDS!

So let's see...

I'll forgo discussing the HF20 issues, the Weku and SMOKE postings and move right on into talking about the garden tear-up, the luffas and the cow pickup that has over-flowed my 19.6 cu.ft deep freezer.

Yeah. we now have 197-lbs of beef (well, less the three Porterhouse steaks we ate for dinner last night) in our deep freezer! SO WONDERFUL being set for a few months with this meat. I spoke with the butcher this morning (I called her because I'm having fantasies about bacon) and asked to be put on the waiting list for any extra pigs that come in.

The BIGGEST Surprise Of All

After thinking I didn't grow the luffa gourds correctly (not having trimmed off the first blossoms- which are the male
ones), imagine my surprise when the other day a church member came over to tear up my peppers, green beans and cucamelon plants only to discover the luffas are here!

I have three luffas that I know I'll be able to use to make my homemade soap over the winter now.

Tomorrow someone is coming over to help me with some household chores and I'm planning to ask her to get the luffas harvested for me.

I'll let them dry out then peel away the outer skin and let them dry out. I'll do a video on this process to share

Ok, what exactly is are luffas? Your week sounded a lot more productive than mine by the way haha; I decided to have a real holiday and did some swimming, exercise, a lot of cooking and exploring the local butcher here (you'd love the different meat and the prices are just crazy!), and just enjoyed hanging out with Brian.

It's nice to be back here though, isn't it?!

well well well... look who showed up...the only person on earth who doesn't know what a luffa plant is.
as to your week..well ANYONE'S week would have been more productive than yours!

Lol. So harsh. Seems from the banter you must be good friends!

well howdy there em3! yes sir we love to play around and give each other a hard time but she usually gets the best of me after I start it! Actually if I don't harass her she goes to discord and asks me what's wrong! lol.

lol
Alright. Good to hear people are keeping it interesting, but not making trouble! :-D
:-P

Peace

Oh it's certainly all in good fun @em3! Thanks for lookin' out though :)

hahaha that's so funny because just this evening, my friend sent me something on facebook, and I was mindlessly scrolling, and saw a guy's video on luffa plants!!! Seriously! Where have I been? Under a rock? I had no idea :)

well ANYONE'S week would have been more productive than yours!

I'm going to give you that one! :)

ahaha! I was right on both points wasn't I?? I don't know if that's ever happened before! lol. like in my life!

well as far as the luffas maybe they didn't have them in Canada?
that is too funny though about the video, of all the times you could have seen that! lol. life can be very funny.

I bet you have used them as a body scrub before. They get sewn to a mit and sold in "spa" or "pampering" kits.

I love luffas. I am happy for you that you were able to grow some this year. I will be looking into growing some next year. My garden is harvested and now cleaning up for the fall. 2 beds ready for garlic. Another today for my sunchokes to be replanted. I think we will get an early winter so time for me to get back to the garden. Have a wonderful week @goldendawne

We grew so many luffas last year that I've been banned from bringing the seeds anywhere near the garden again. I wanted to try eating the baby luffas, but never got around to trying them.

Your luffas is a nice surprise. I like it when our gardens surprise us! Nice to have all that beef, but I'm with you, I would be hankering some nice bacon too.

Yay for surprises! Nature is awesome! :p How much did that quarter of a cow cost you? Where I live, it costed us $300CAN and we got quite a bit less than what is shown in your picture. I know its hard to compare because it goes by the size of cow. My question is just based on curiosity on how things are in different parts of the world :)

I can't seem to get Dtube videos to play but I LOVE that your luffa gourds grew - so exciting when that happens! :)

oh no! Sorry about the DTube issues!
But yes! I thought all was lost and this luffa crop was a bust... but now I know they just take a little longer than other gourds do.

We just have a really bad internet connection and not even the lowest settings seem to work. One of the sacrifices of country living! I am looking forward to seeing you process them. We are definitely too cold to grow them, gourds are usually pushing it.

You've certainly been busy! I feel like I need to rest after reading this... joy.png

I am very interested in your Luffa Gourds, can't wait to see the post on that!

I love that vegetable! Yup! WEKU time! LOL
Of course, I will never leave steemit! I love steemit! Hey! Buy a new refrigerator! LOL

Oh me either! Steemit is my first and will always be my favorite!

I may have to get a second freezer if we want a half of a cow- this 1/4 filled ours up pretty quick

Food for 1 month! Hahaha... I am a vegetarian but I ate meat every Friday only. (^_^)

howdy there goldendawne! haha! look at that dang plant, so they just stopped climbing because they got to the top of the house there, how high would they climb if they had the chance anyway? wow. and those huge leaves, that's a pretty awesome plant, how can you tell when the gourds are ready to pick?

Awesome to find hidden produce!!

I don't know if your luffa are big enough for scrubs. But you can eat them. They have to be pretty big to dry and use as scrubs. Yours look the same size as ours. I know nothing of trimming male flowers...but do know we got a late start with luffa this year and only one may be big enough to produce a dried gourd. The rest I have been harvesting and cooking. They are good and like zuccini or squash when less than 12" to 16" long.

...what about green tomatoes??
You were a part of THIS conversation one year ago. Did you ever make any chutney?
