Do we only shift our thinking when disaster strikes?

in tribevibes •  5 years ago

A TribeSteemup bi-weekly question.

The short answer is no. People may shift their thinking for a variety of reasons but disaster is the ultimate motivator. Critical thinkers on the other hand may change their thinking simply upon learning something new while others refuse to even consider it despite all evidence.
With knowledge comes responsibility that a lot of people don't want when it's going to upset their life's routine that they've become comfortable with.

We are resistant to change when the inertia of one idea must be suppressed to allow another idea to take root. How far are we willing to take it? How long are we willing to ride one idea despite the deep inside knowledge that it's wrong?

"There's an inmost center in us all, where truth abides in fullness." ~Robert Browning

Point is, we already know the truth if we're honest with ourselves.

But even disaster is sometimes not enough to change our thinking. In the words of Martin Niemoller:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade
unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

I'd like to think that when our backs are against the wall that finally we would listen to our consciences and take a stand against the injustices of this world. Currently, there are a lot of protests going on around the world, so much so, it makes us Americans look bad. Here we are the greatest terrorist organization in history and the people keep going about their daily routine like its business as usual.

Protests around the world.

In Hong Kong, a new extradition law sparked protests back in June, but the conflict is escalating.

A criminal code in Indonesia led to protests against its draconian laws, and the president's second term faces ongoing dissent.

In the Netherlands, thousands of Dutch farmers continue to clog highways with their tractors.

Several protests are ongoing in France, including an almost year long movement by yellow jacket demonstrators.

Peruvians are blockading access to copper mines, while confusion surrounding the president's government persists.

Protesters in Haiti called for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse.

Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese citizens are protesting government corruption.

Syria's Kurdish population is protesting the removal of American troops.

Protests are expected to erupt in Iraq against Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's government.

In Israel, there are protests focused on police inaction in violence against Israeli Arabs.

A wave of protests hit Chile in October. Chileans are calling out increasing inequality, stagnant wages, and rising oil prices.

All indications are that things will have to get bad enough that almost everyone is affected. What we won't admit is that we are already there.

Oh we are SO there, hence the protests, which is heartening to me. Hoping for a new world order.. silver linings in tipping points? Hard not to be cynical!

Yes, I too find it encouraging that so many around the world are questioning authority. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is the beginning because as it stand now, the system is quite entrenched.

With knowledge comes responsibility that a lot of people don't want when it's going to upset their life's routine that they've become comfortable with.

I think this describes the essence of all social problems. The illusion of control that strengthens in routine and the establishment of a comfort zone keeps us from looking at the realities that disturb this. When disaster strikes and we can't avoid it any longer we refuse to learn from the experience, desperately trying to go back to our safe haven and hope it was just a terrible nightmare...

The rulers must love that part of our human nature as it helps to keep us in our "box". Now lay on the media propaganda with constant deception and it's an uphill battle.

the people would rather be fooled and live in peace than to be told they've been fooled and if they don't start being honest with themselves, their whole damn house is going to burn down and their kids will face tyranny like they've never seen before.

... like silent raindrops fell.. sounds of silence
