I saw with a lot of attention what happened in #Sarajevo in 1992 when I was about 11 years old.
While watching the news I couldnt belive my eyes that I was actually looking at War.
Years went by and for some reason I just a hunch inside of me that wanted to "feel" what it was like to be in Sarajevo.
Can not explain why I wanted that feeling, I just knew I had to experience it.
My trip started in PLOCE the southern most port in #Bosnia&Herzegovina. This is the most famous route to Sarajevo, you have a beautiful river next to you almost the entire time , the scenes are beautiful and you catch a view of #Mostar another city destroyed by the war
When I arrived at the city, I had such a feeling of accomplishment, I couldnt believe I was there, the energy was so incredible. Later on the trip I discovered the uniques of the city. First of all I noticed the incredible amount of graves all over the city. Later I learned that since the Radical Serbs took advantage of the funeral services to bomb civilians, Bosniacs started to bury the people right there where they died or a particular placed where they could find cover
You can see the scars of war everywhere in the city. Bosniacs do not want to repair those because it helps them to remember the agony they went trough together as citizens. They take pride that even thou they were under constant fire for 4 years, no school were shut down, no theater was closed, life was as normal as they could. They will not bend us!
Bosniacs take a lot of pride in their intercultural city. There a few places in the world where you can see a mosque, a church and a synagogue on the same block which it was the reason why Radical Serbs wanted to exterminate them (literally). The city is predominant muslis, so at 6pm you can hear all the mosques singing their prayers, it was one of the most incredible experiences I had, it was beautiful.
Everywhere there are signs of war, you can even talk to anyone in this city and every two sentences they will have the word WAR in it. There is even a plaque for the place where WW 1 begun
Of course my tour will not be complete with out a visit to the "Salvation tunnel". This is a tunnel build by the owners of the house whom are considered National Heroes. From there about 80% of the food, medical provisions and guns where delivered to the Bosniacs. Even the president of the country used the tunner on what they called the VIP chair. Radical Serbs never found the tunnel but there are bombs that never exploded inside the house to serve testament of the random bombing
My tour guide is my personal hero, he did not stop telling me all the stories during the war. What got to me the most was the fact that we were the same age. While I was 15 years old trying to get to parties, he was wearing jeans and a rifle standing watch in the snow.
Of course there are many more details of the story which I can write them all without actually creating a book.
I encourage you to take that journey you always wanted and enjoy the experiences life brings by itself.
