Visit to old fortress in Croatia from 13th century

Medvedgrad (Bear's town)

At the top of the southern side of the mountain Medvednica, you can find a medieval town that has been not far from the capital of Croatia, Zagreb for eight centuries, it's name is Medvedgrad (which literally means bear town).

It was built in 1254, after a catastrophic burglary of the Tatars, which devastated these areas in a devastating battle and destroyed and burned the Zagreb(todays capital of Croatia). Built primarily for the protection of citizens, bishops and church treasures, but interesting fact is that Medvedgrad has never been under attack.

Medvedgrad was abandoned in 1590 after the fort destroyed a terrible earthquake, and its last rulers moved to a much more modern and comfortable castle in Šestine.

Today Medvedgrad is turistic destination where visitors can explore this ancient fortress alone or with a guide and enlighten the "dark" middle ages, and memorable souvenirs can be found in Great Souvenirs shop.
In 1994, under the southern foothold, the "altar of the homeland" was erected, the work of the sculptor Kuzma Kovacic, where the eternal flame burns in honor of all the Croatian heroes.

It was great experience to visit it and sight to be seen because it is very high on the mountain. If you are not in good sport condition you will get sore muscles while you get there.

I also visited the The Queen's Well, a powerful source of potable water from the Kraljevac stream and is named after the legendary "Black Queen" (it is supposed to be Barbara Celjska, the second wife of King Sigismund of Luxemburg).
The Black queen was the ruler of Medvedgrad I spoke earlier about.

And at the end we find this huge tree, where many put their names on :) I hope you enjoyed this story and photos.
