This is pretty off topic compared to my usual writings about cryptocurrency, but I saw a snippet of a recent JRE episode that talked about it at length.
The argument for us living in a simulated reality is pretty convincing to be honest. Though there's no way (at least that we know of) to prove this reality to be true or not, I think it's fascinating to think about and discuss it.
The argument, for those of you who haven't heard it is as follows:
We are on the cusp of virtual reality technology. Some games/movies that are coming out are very realistic, although we still know that we're playing/watching when we immerse ourselves in them.
But, the argument states that if this VR technology continues to flourish, then we will see it continue to get more and more realistic. After dozens, hundreds or even thousands of years of growth in VR and immersive technologies, why wouldn't it be plausible that a VR game comes out that is like real life. Where you can live a different world and embody some different lifestyle on some different planet.
The argument continues that if this were to be possible, then what are the odds that we are currently living in base reality (the first and original "timeline" so to speak) and not in some other civilization's simulation who had figured out this technology?
That's the argument, what do you think about the possibility that we live in a simulation? Are you swayed to one sider or another? Why or why not?

I can offer another way to understand the movie.
The book that Neo opens in the beginning is a book called Simulacra and Simulacrum written by Jean Baudrillard. Neo pulls a computer chip from the book. This is a signal to the audience that we can understand and interpret the computer simulation through the lens of Simulacra and Simulation.
In short, like very short, Simulacra and Simulation explains how a "system of control" is created and sustained. Baudrillard was not referring to a computer simulation but rather, symbols and signs. Language is one example of this. The Matrix, then, can be understood as our culture, an interconnected set, or matrix, of symbols, signs, and ideologies that inform the behavior of those who identify with it. For The Wachowski Brothers, this matrix, our Western, capitalist culture, is a system of control meant to be dismantled. All of these symbols, signs, and whatever else, are designed to control our minds and render us passive consumers rather than creators of Reality.
Baudrillard understood culture - the world of media, technology, advertising, and marketing - and the language and other symbols meant to represent "things" as separate, but still indistinguishable from, true reality [which we can never know].
Because of that, we're already living in a simulation.

Wow great comment and points I'd never thought about "The Matrix" on that level before and was not familiar with Baudrillard.
I guess another movie aside from "The Matrix" that questions reality and our ability to perceive it is "Inception."
I think there are similar theories and groups of thought as to whether dreams might be different realities that we are experiencing and which is more valid, our dream experiences or waking life.
And of course "Waking Life" is an awesome movie on Existentialism.

This topic is very interesting - I don't really think that it's the case though.. I can see how there might be something similar to that in a few years from now through VR. Just imagine what kind of shock this would be to find out that this is actually not our reality! Now I know how everyone felt finding out that the earth wasn't flat :)

It's indeed mind-boggling to think about that concept... However I guess it means that the "players" are thousands, not to say millions of years ahead, and playing this game with us. Are they playing their own characters, are we just the variables in the game, or can they "ghost" us whenever they want - slipping in our minds to make the decisions, a bit like these guys entering John Malkovich psyche? :)
