Remembering the troops AND the dogs

in troops •  8 years ago

Today is Memorial Day. Today is the day where most of us sleep in, barbecue, and visit friends. But today is also a very important day, where we remember the troops that fought for our country and died for us. I do think however, a lot of us including me forget about the dogs that have helped save our troops and have died for them. We don't hear about them much on the news, or in social media. So I think it's natural for us to sometimes forget about those special dogs, that died for their owner without even having to think about it. They just did what they were trained to do, and did it without question.

A few interesting facts are this. According to the American Humane Association, each military working dog saves between 150-200 lives. In the past, military dogs were considered "equipment" and either left behind, or euthanized when they were no longer able to work. In 2000, "Robby's Law" was passed that facilitates the adoption of former working military dogs by law enforcement agencies, former handlers, and other persons capable of caring for these dogs. Save-A-Vet is one organization that helps find suitable homes for K-9 veterans.

So while your swimming in a pool, or having fun with friends, please do not forget about our troops, but also don't forget about their companions that would sacrifice their lives to save theirs.
