A Chinese merchant sailor preparing a Molotov cocktail as their defense against the Somali Pirates.
Today I was scanning for video's for my advert post and got sidetracked by the Somali pirate videos. If you haven't seen them they are quite awesome and a little addictive.
This has been going on way too long now and I am hoping things are slowing down and eliminating the threat is the only way. There are a flotilla of navy vessels against the pirates speedboats. You will be shocked to know how many Navies are involved out there now. Phillipines, Chinese,British,American,Indian and Russians are all out patrolling the waters.Just think it is nearly the 10 year anniversary of Captain Phillips and his crew being hijacked whilst on route delivering food aid.
Most of the merchant ships that travel this route have some sort of preventative measures in place including mercenaries on board. This vessel in the video below has a ring of barbed wire in place and it just seems crazy. The rest of the world has just been way too soft as it just shows these guys don't care and are brazenly attacking vessels. The money a pirate can make is just such a huge temptation and they have bonuses for first one on board etc.
As you can see by this they still attack even when the boats have protection so they know what they are up against and even more reason to show no mercy. Some criminals are just that desperate they don't care so why must the Navies who are involved care.
You know the bad guys are going to get it and they deserve what they get and more. What was surprising is the difference between the various navies working the area. The British and Americans as per normal doing everything by the book not scaring anyone. The Russians and Chinese though put the fear of god into the pirates and maybe should leave some survivors to spread the rumors.
The problem I see is the Americans and British fire warning shots and allow them to get away even though they know that group just attacked a boat. The one instance which I found disappointing is they had the evidence that this boat attacked a ship, but couldn't arrest anyone as they had thrown the weapons into the sea. Why even arrest them and create issues with a possibility of them coming back.
The way the Russians and Chinese work is they gather the evidence of who attacked who through surveillance and reports, track the boat back to the mother ship and then remove all the boats associated in one swoop. Surely this makes more sense and you are not putting your personnel in harms way by boarding vessels looking for arrests.Arrests are very rare as most evidence is tossed over board. The Americans and English fire warning shots but that is it.
Being politically correct working with a group that will only take advantage of the softly softly approach doesn't work.I am glad to see ships in the area patrolling and most vessels that do that route now are heavily armed with bunkers and machine gun nests. Eliminating the scumbags is the only way and I think the soft approach by the Americans and English hasn't helped and has made the whole thing drag on far too long.

This might not be the right approach, but I say just bring our ships home and let companies hire protection. American millitary being involved in policing the world only increases american negative sentiment.
Its not always about the money if pirates are anything like gangs. Most gang members make less than minimum wage. Its not until you become a leader in the gang is only when you start making decent money.

I think just leave it to the the Russians and Chinese to sort out. This would have been sorted many years ago and wouldn't be a problem today. Chinese got involved when some of their ships were attacked and rescued a crew.Pirates don't operate the same way gangs do and are paid very well for the boats they hijack.

Hi @cryptoandcoffee
I wonder how efficient Molotov cocktails are against those pirats? I cannot see them really giving up if they would already decide to "attack". Could this sort of weapon stop them? And are Molotov cocktails legal? Just curious.
Also I wonder, if those secuity guys are shooting to kill? or they are not allowed to do so?
Sometimes I wonder why those pirats still do exist. It shouldn't be that difficult to help Somalian ecconomy grow and provide all those desparate people with means of earning some money, without taking such a huge risk.
Cheers
Piotr

I don't think they would be that effective unless they landed a direct hit. I don't think anyone cares regarding legality as it is everyone for themselves. Shoot to kill as they are being fired upon. No one worries about dead bodies 200 nautical miles out to sea. They are in fishing boats that have a range of 24 nautical miles so they are there for one purpose only. The mother ships supply them with fuel and arms. The big problem is it is the amount of money they make of one vessel. A pirate can expect between 20 and 30 000 Dollars per vessel captured.

Americans and British are so afraid of being ctiticized for past wrongs and injustices and forced to apologize again. There are armies of westerners online working inadvertantly or directly for Chinese and Russian propagandists blaming western governments for being the source of all evil. This is the end result being soft against pirates and terrorists. Meanwhile other countries treat them how they should be treated, but it is okay. Intersting story btw.

Holy crap I also saw documentaries on this last week and it surprised me how little the americans and Europeans are doing. I saw this video where they literally caught a hijacked ship and then just let them go because they couldn't do anything??!!
Its frustrating to watch, and these pirates make millions selling ship loads of stolen goods. Insane!

Hi Alicia. It is totally insane I know. The problem is they are too soft and very happy to see the Chinese and Russians aren't. The Russians caught a group of 29 pirates and had to release them. Where they released them is anyone's guess as they were never seen again. Unfortunately you should have no feelings when it comes to dealing with this sort and clearing the area using any method is the answer now. This has been going over 10 years now and should have been 6 months to sort it.

I hate to say it, but I agree! They will make an example of a few and this nonsense will stop.
Luckily the somalians seem to not be extremely violent( from what I saw) in Nigeria thats a whole other problem!
Cool post and thanx for sharing, its been on my mind all week

I'm an American ...... and I agree with you..... for what 2 cents that's not worth...
I have read stories and seen reports about the pirates and they should be shown no mercy, since they show none. In my opinion, they should have been eliminated a long time ago. It has been ridiculous to allow it to go on for so long.
