A True Story

Ok. This is a true story, but sounds fucking insane. But it happened.

Everyone knows, or should by now, that my mother and I are recovering addicts.

When I was a teenager we had a neighbor named Blake. Even after we moved from that neighborhood, “Windjammer Village” a mobile home park with a “beachie” feel, in Garden City Beach, SC (just south of Myrtle Beach), we kept in touch. He sold my mom and I pills. (Lorcets/Percs/Methadose Waifers/whatever)
I even remember him coming over for one of our weekend “tattoo parties” to get his shitty little rebel flag tattoo touched up. (He was pretty much a drunk redneck. We didn’t care too much, we just wanted his drugs)

So anyway, it’s the early 2000s and my mom acquired two PCs for the price of one (don’t worry how 😉)
So we traded one to Blake for drugs.

Fast Forward

Summer 2002. I’m on tour with my old punk/ska band, Dead Center. I remember, ironically, the day I ran out of pain killers, we were playing a little bar in El Paso, TX, called Wildhares, I think, though I’m not sure of the spelling.

I call home to check in and my cousin (who lived with us) tells me that Blake killed his wife. He shot her and my mom was freaked out because it was over the PC we traded, because she was flirting with guys. My mom thought he was gonna come for her because she gave them it. And we were helpless, because me AND my brother (my bassist at the time) were in El Paso, TX, and had no way to protect her. I guess at first he was on the run, or hiding, or something. What a stressful, shitty day!

I was also going through withdrawals and had no way to rectify that situation either.

Soon after he was arrested and ended up pleading guilty and sentenced to 30 years. This was 2002 and I haven’t heard much since. BUT, I just found the original paper clippings. And one online.
Crazy shit indeed.

Me and Ed (my bff and singer of almost all my bands). Either 1996/1997.

The trailer behind us is where it happened. 175 Offshore Dr. (I lived in 177)
