I will not go over in detail all the lies, bigotry, cruelty, and stupidity in Trump's speech tonight. Anyone who cares probably already knows what I think of him. I was against him from the very beginning, and time has only hardened that opposition.
I will only note this one thing: Trump called for the death penalty for drug dealers (which, IIRC, he did not do in either 2016 or 2020). Even if you support the War on Drugs (I obviously do not), this is ridiculously unjust and disproportionate. And I would especially commend this part of Trump's speech to any libertarians still deluded enough to think he deserves our support.
I can think of many things Trump himself has done that are far more deserving of the death penalty than any drug dealing. Examples include the brutal family separation policy, and his role in the events of January 6. But I do not advocate this degree of retribution. Far from it! I will be satisfied if Trump serves just one year in prison for each of these actions. That's surely restrained and appropriate, is it not? One year for each brutalized child. One year for each innocent person killed or injured on January 6, and so on. I'll even thrown in some time off for good behavior!
Once Trump has served the requisite several thousand years in prison (5000 separated children; about 100-150 innocents killed or injured on Jan. 6), he can come back and talk about how great he is. Not before.
To be clear, I don't claim that current law requires these sentences. I claim this is the minimum level of punishment he deserves in a fully just legal system (which ours, obviously, is not).
