I rarely feel the need to comment on Trump but FWIW, his supposedly great command of social media sometimes seems bizarre to me.

It’s not political suicide among conservatives to fail to acknowledge your own wife and mother of your child, your own ex-wives and mothers of your children, your own daughters who gave you grandchildren, on Mother’s Day?

And anyway:

Who writes like this?

Why no Oxford comma after “Wives”, but put it after “Marxists”?

Why capitalize “country”? (The others maybe are ok for emphasis.)

“Importantly” I suppose is a common error, but seems especially weird here.

And who is supposed to “make”? Is this a work task assigned to their mothers, on Mother’s Day? Or to their kids? Is it a weird kind of out-of-context prayer? Is this what he thinks a prayer is?

The pretext of the message, that of all the things to worry about as a presidential candidate, worthy of attention are what might at most be a few thousand Radical Left Fascists (do these even exist in America at all anymore?), Marxists (there are a few, mostly in academia and activism work, but for them Marxism is primarily a social theory and it seems pretty wonkish to care about this edge-case group), and Communists (I have met maybe three actual American Communists in my life, and I used to be in academia and deliberately seek out radicals; I suspect 90%+ of Americans have never met an American Communist nor can even name any self-avowed one nor even a non-avowed person who nonetheless fits the bill. Have there been any Communists in American public life since 1980?).

He often seems kinda drunk. I know he doesn’t drink. But still.

PS.

He literally made his face into an American flag. Doesn’t his audience care a lot about formal flag etiquette? The conservatives I’ve know would get all upset if a flag touched the ground. They certainly don’t want it treated like some kind of patriotism mask, which in any case evokes analogies to blackface.

I understand the reasons folks supported him and even still do. But these antics don’t speak to the issues that move them. There was a moment in American politics when populism was at a crescendo, but the vast majority of Trump voters are worried about being disenfranchised in various ways and right-wing nationalism isn’t their main thing. He’s going to lost that thin edge of suburban women if he keeps this up.
