Trump to terminate birthright citizenship?

  1. On policy grounds this is a terrible idea. The best way to make new Americans is to give them a stake, from birth, in the success or failure of our country, and to give them a voice and a vote in our government. That's what birthright citizenship does. Observers from Alexis de Tocqueville onward have praised the easy terms by which immigrants can become Americans.

  2. It’s a disputed question in some circles whether the Fourteenth Amendment actually confers birthright citizenship on all babies born here. I'm on the side saying that the plain meaning of the text is "Yes, obviously babies born here are Americans."

  3. I understand that to our friends on the left, the constitution is a living document. I therefore must imagine they are ok with scrapping birthright citizenship. Because progress!

  4. To the extent that the Constitution does have a determinate meaning, it can't be amended by presidential decree. That's just not how it works.

I think it has more to do with the fact that innumerable amounts of people abuse the current citizenship laws of the United States. Many people come here to simply give birth to a child and get US citizenship. Think of it as a loophole. These people circumvent immigration laws and as a result, it only encourages more people to do so as well. What's the point of waiting to legally immigrate when you can just come here and pop out a child and have them sponsor you. We are a nation of laws and they must be obeyed. Without laws we have anarchy.

I am not an American and have never been there. I think it's a good thing trump is doing. If you're not a U.S. citizen and you travel there to deliver your baby, the baby should not be accorded citizenship since the parents are not citizens. Everyone should fix their countries and stop looking for a safe landing for their kids. If what trump is planning to do had been done years ago, i think most leaders, mostly African leaders would have been up and doing.

It's actually a good policy to me and i hope it scales through. Everyone should fix their countries
