Ten years ago, Obama said that, while some people insist that tyranny is right around the corner, we should ignore and reject those voices, because actually everything is gonna be fine, we're all gonna be fine, American democracy is super duper special, guys, there is no lurking danger just around the corner.
Today, Trump is in court arguing that he and all presidents have "absolute immunity" against federal prosecution for any crimes they commit while in office (and possibly out of office, it's hard to tell what that maniac thinks), after promising to use his second term to bring "retribution" against political opponents and their millions of voters.
There's no better example of liberalism's failure to even conceive of its own destruction than this.
