I have seen a minority of progressives asking to know why people supported Trump and what needs do they see him addressing. That is an important step if progressives want to reach some of the groups that rejected Harris on Tuesday. I only ask that if you do that then do it in honestly. Do not approach working class or religious individuals with the assumption that they are driven by racism, sexism or some other negative attribute. Do not assume that Christians are voting for Trump due to some distorted notionof Chrisitan nationalism and want to turn the U.S. into a theocracy. Those people exists but they are not the major force that propelled Trump.

As you know I do not support Trump. But I have listened more closely to his supporters than most progressives, perhaps in part because I do not support the Democrats either. I think much could be gained with conversations where we find comment interests and shared goals. So if Trump's victory allows some of the left to take seriously the concners of people that they have, and let's be honest here, look down upon in the past then I would consider that a benefit to our national community. But that can only happen if the conversation is done in good faith and not in an attempt to stigmatize a group that already feels stigmatized and some of who voted for Trump because of that feeling.
