I think Trump is trying to secure the military's support in case there is an attempt to remove him from office, I've said this from the start when he began to fill his cabinet with former generals.
I don't think it's conspiracy theory that he fears a coup and he wants to have the military in his back pocket. This may sounds like banana republic stuff that could never happen here but think about whats been happening lately it's not at all far fetched.
