Making Steemit better a minnow at a time (VII) - Password Management

Hello,

Actually I wanted to write this post next week, but today it happened again that someone who is active here on the platform has lost his master key. So dear people, here are some tips that it does not happen to you:

  • save/write the first password on several mediums such as 3-4 paper sheets you keep well in different places.

  • change the first password but keep the first password as indicated above. Why? Because only then in case the new password is lost you can get back to your account through the first one, but only after 30 days of changing it. Link here: https://steemit.com/recover_account_step_1

  • log in only with the posting key, only by this you can reduce the damage if someone should steal your key

  • have I already told you about several backups? :)

  • always have the master key on at least 2 mediums saved beside your computer, e.g. several USB sticks that you use only for that. Sounds paranoid, but it's always better to be protected. Paper is safest if you do not forget where you hide it.

  • you should not save the passwords in the browser. It's not safe!

  • if you did that and lost your Master Key, you have a chance to regain it. Tutorial for Chrome can be found here:

It is similar for the other browsers.

Unfortunately, many people do not take this very seriously. First, it's a shame if you have your account and then lose because you put a lot in there, from time and creativity to Steem and secondly that unfortunately there are people who exploit these weaknesses.

I would be glad about your comments and tips!

As a bonus, I will give some accounts to some users who have lost their password. ;)

Hallo,

i had used this once :) for a friend he forgot the password.

The safest is to save it on multiple storage media, a usb stick, an external hard drive, on paper in a booklet where only you know what it means. Some of them may be lost or broken, so there are alternatives to save them.

Am I the guy you are referring to in the article?🤭😂🤷🏻‍♂️ Just a quick tip. I know not to save it in my browser but I didn’t plan to become a regular Steem addict either.

I went into the settings on my iPhone and found it!!

If this can even help one person!

I bought 212 STEEM Power on this acct so I was super sad about losing my password. That’s why I was frantically posting for help.😅👌🏼✅

I was thinking about you, but yes, you are one of the many! ;)

Lol I couldn’t help but feel like THAT guy!😂 I do appreciate the helpful post. As a new kid it’s kind of hard to navigate.

When I created this acct I didn’t realize it was a crypto acct. we get so used to signing up for social sites where a password reset is as simple as sending an email.

Lesson learned! Blessings to you! Thanks again!!!😁📈 #followed

How about keeping it on Google drive? Someone told me it's not as safe.

Every thing kept in the cloud is not safe. You don't own the servers and it can be hacked.

Thanks, will go through your solutions step by step.

I will get a tattoo of my password. How's that :)

il's Depend where you gonna have the tattoo hehehe ;)

Hahaha good one. I think i'm going to have it on my middle finger just to show you :PP
(thug life music enters)

Thanks for this. I'm still a bit confused over the use of each of those passwords. Expect my private message soon.

Luckily I'm not one of those but I will save my password in a notepad and then on a stick :D Thanks for the tips! :)

such a useful post i myself want to have new one thank you

Well, you are right, saving the keys in soft form is not a good idea because technology has its flaws with it, writing on a paper and keeping it safe is safest way to keep it secure. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you for this great article, it's very important to keep your account safe, so I highly recommend @alexvan advice :)

What about lastpass or any other secure password manager?

Thank you for sharing these security stuff.. I'm also neglecting these precautions but they are really really vital..

I can't imagine someone losing his steam account after working a lot on it and having steem worth of thousands of dollars on his account. It's unbelievable! It can often happen that people's PC get damaged or stuff like that and they didn't save their passwords

It's hard to believe that this can happen to someone 😳 (😅🙈)

So much has been said about NOT losing the password .... that I have saved it in several places and printed so I have a hard copy too 😅

Hi, @alexvan! As a new steemian, it's hard to accumulate so much information that we need to know. I found myself frustrated these days because on one hand I want to learn more, on the other hand I do not have enough time to dig deep and look for information that helps me to improve my performance on the Steemit platform. So, what I mean is that I appreciate your work and all those who have decided to help minnows. A big thank you!

It's best you save it as draft in your email. I think it's safest that way.
