Useless but Fun Linux Terminal Tips: Star Wars & Matrix + Bonus!

in tutorial •  7 years ago

Do you love Star Wars? What about the Matrix?

Today's "Useless but Fun" is "2 in 1" (and as a happy accident, this sentence rhymes!)

Star Wars fans, rejoice!

This one is very old, and most of you have probably seen it! It's just a telnet server that has Star Wars in text mode, so you can watch it from Windows as well! I haven't seen Star Wars so I don't know how accurate this is, but it is still fun!

telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

and enjoy!

The Matrix is here!

What if I told you that you live in the Matrix? Not really... You can make your computer look like it is in the Matrix though!

Install cmatrix: sudo apt-get install cmatrix

When it finishes, just run cmatrix. You will get something like this:

Note: Do not use this in production servers, as cmartix is a somewhat intensive program.

Bonus tip (not that useless though!)

Run curl wttr.in! You will get a reply with the weather in the area the remote server thinks you are in.

You can run this: curl wttr.in/athens to get the weather in Athens!

You can read more about wttr.in, here

Big thanks to @pilcrow, who commented with this one on my previous Useless but Fun Linux Terminal Tip

Enjoy! :)
