Good day steemit community!
Today, I'm gonna post an article related to my previous post about AC motors and Generators. Here are my other post relating to this topic. If you have time, you can read this to understand more.
- 7 Common Enclosure Types of AC Motors.
- Parallel Running of Generators
- Understanding Motor Nameplate | revealing the essential information in a single nameplate
This is a informative article and embedded with tutorial on how to run electrical motor using direct on-line starter. If you are interested, you can follow this tutorial. But there are issues to concern like safety and availability of materials.
In safety issues, I am using actual components like motor and also this tutorial handles 220 Volts of source. Accident like electrocuted may happen if safety concern is neglected.
In materials issues, I am using an industry based in some components which is mostly not available in common households.
Hey! I made a video on this. Check it out on the last part of this post
What is a Motor Stater?
In simple saying, motor starter is used to start and stop the motor. But there are specially designed switches, breakers, relays and other component that can withstand the electricity delivered to the motor. There are also added protection device which protect the circuitry and the motor itself.
So, motor starter major functions are; 1. Switch power to electrical motor by means of automatic or manual control. 2. Give protection to motor from faults and overload.
Why We Need Motor Starter
Motor starter is needed to limit the starting current of an electrical motor. In three phase motor, rotor’s current is proportional to the relative speed between the stator and rotor. At start, when motor’s speed is zero the speed difference between stator and rotor is very high or at its maximum. This results a very high current that flows to the rotor upon starting. When the rotor draw a very high current, stator windings also draws a very high current that could bring to 5-8 times than the full load current.
This very high current at starting of motor can damage our motor windings and this very high current can cause large voltage drop in a line. It means, if there are other devices that are connected with in the same line, the motor will steal the power needed for other devices during starting. These affects other devices connected with in the same line
Types of Motor Starters
1. Stator Resistance Starter
2. Auto Transformer Starter
3. Star Delta Starter
4. Direct On-Line Starter
5. Soft Starter

Tutorial on How to Run Motor in Direct On-line Method
To follow tutorial, we need the following materials:
1 unit circuit breaker (MCCB)
source
1 unit magnetic contactor (MC)
source
1 unit over current relay (OCR)
source
1 unit stop-start push button
source
2 unit fuse; with fuse holder
source
Connecting wires
source
1 multitester
source
Direct On-line Motor Starter Circuit.
Direct On-line Circuit
Power Circuit
Control Circuit
To fully understand, I will identify the symbols in our direct on-line circuit diagram.
Now, lets wire our components using our connecting wires with banana plug.
Steps for Connection
For power circuit, refer to the diagram
- MCCB must be in off position
- Connect from load side of the breaker to the line side of the contactor by using wire connectors
- connect from load side of the contactor to the line side of the OCR by using wire connectors
- connect from load side of the OCR to the line side of the motor terminal by using wire connectors
For control circuit, refer to the diagram
- MCCB must be in off position
- For motor starter controller, refer to diagram 2
- Connect line U from MCCB to the line side of fuse # 1
- From load side of fuse # 1, connect to # 95 of OCR
- From # 96 of OCR, connect to # 1 of push button switch
- From # 2 of push button switch, connect to # 3 of push button switch
- From # 4 of push button switch, connect to A1 of MC
- From # 3 of push button switch, connect to # 13 of MC
- From # 4 of push button switch, connect to # 14 of MC
- From A2, connect to the load side of fuse # 2
- From line side of fuse # 2, connect to line V of MCCB
- From line side of MCCB, connect to the main circuit breaker intended for each module
These are pictures on actual wiring of Direct On-line Motor Starter.
This is the motor I used.
I used double-Wye for this motor because I am using a 220V supply.

Here's the proof that I did it.
Hello! I have cited the source of information regarding motor starter above. You can check it out for more.

Hi @taqincz, You can try also another motor stater like Wye-Delta. It's cool but more complex circuit. Well, for me Direct on-line is the simplest of them all..

Hi also @ thinkingmind you mean Wye-Delta what is it.
because I did not try wye-delta.

heheheh.. you noticed it @hawk399.. there was a motor stand although.. but it was too low that I can't capture the entire scenario with camera.. so lift it up with plastic chairs..hehejeh
