I'm 62 now, and have left a career in the detailing field. My mission everyday when working was trying to eliminate car wax from the face of the earth; in all honesty why do people put basically grease on their car finish? Yeah, it makes your car shine for a couple of days, but then it will look like crap later.
Think about it, wax melts at around 80 degrees F, it traps dirt and grime in it when soft, and when you wash your car with just dish soap you get swirl marks. Now ,will this happen if you wax your car a couple of times? No, but if you continue to keep applying it you will have a problem where you will need an expensive detailer to remove them who may make the problem worse.
Paint protection, what a laugh, against what I ask ? Answer: nothing.
Take my advice there are new products on the market that protect your paint , provide shine, and can be washed to remove dirt and grime with no damage.
If you have questions about your paint finish, please ask me. I have over 20 years experience as a detailer.
What are the new products that protect paint? My 10 mo old Silverado already has water spots that wont come off by waxing due to sprinkler water hitting the truck a couple of times per week. How do you suggest getting rid of the water spots?

Nasty problem, and one I have a lot of experience with; my guess is your sprinklers use water from a well. Down here in Florida that can turn a finish orange, and destroy your clear coat in quick time.
To answer your question about what products protect your paint; I ask you this: are you willing to do the work yourself, or some one else?To make this simple for you, I would first wash your truck with Dawn Soap, if the water spots do not come off , try using some vinegar in plain water in a strong mixture to soften the remaining spots. If they are still there,
go to Walmart and buy a clay bar with a lubricant for around $5 bucks that should correct the issue.
Although, the issue is the sprinkler water hitting your truck, and you need something that will prevent the water from bonding to the clear coat. Your truck is still new, so do it now before damage occurs that will require paint correction, or repainting.

Our water comes from city pipes but it is super hard here in southern California. I tried vinegar already and it did not work. So I will try dawn. I can do the work myself but am not opposed to having it done. What do you suggest?

Can you send me some pics of what your problem is? My email address is: billdaley15@ gmail.com; from there I can give a solution to your problem.
I would suggest doing the work yourself to save money, and also finding a good detailer is another issue.

What is the wax supposed to do? Is it like clearcoat?

"What is the wax supposed to do? Is it like clearcoat?"
Wax is just grease, it gets soft when hot, and gets hard when cold; during these cycles dirt and grime collect into what you call a clear coat which gets dull and hard. That is what wax does, and not what is suppose to do.
