Snowfall [TV-series review]:

in tv-show •  7 years ago

This show is basically a violent drug-drama, set during the summer of 1983 in South Central, Los Angeles. The protagonist “Franklin”, is portrayed as a bright but reckless young man, a “school-boy” hellbent on making it “big time” no matter the consequences.

Franklin lives with his (single) mother who is trying to make an honest living, but at the same time she is failing at steering Franklin in the right direction, maybe it's because of their social situation and her being a single mother or maybe Franklin just doesn’t care about playing by the rules, as long as he can deceive her.

Anyway, Franklin's moral compass is thrown out of the window,
all he wants is just one thing: money!

Driven by greed and ambition Franklin drags his friend Leon into selling cocaine, they get entangled with the eccentric crime-lord Avi, and end up pushing his product in their neighborhood, this gets them into trouble with both the law and other criminals.

Meanwhile the washed up “luchador” (Mexican wrestler) Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata makes ambitious moves to climb up the ladder in a Tijuana based crime-family.

The show also follows Teddy, a somewhat rouge CIA agent who gets more and more ruthless in his quest for glory…

Franklin, Gustavo and Teddy all have their own plots in the same story and as the show progresses these plots intertwine more and more. The show has many strong charismatic characters, and even though it has some interesting female roles, it feels heavily male-dominated. Snowfall has a lot of action, and the characters feel credible, but it is sometimes hard to identify with the lead characters because they basically come across as quite mean and crazy.

The soundtrack is amazing and it has some really cool West coast funk and hip-hop gems, like the song by Ronnie Hudson And The Street People,"West Coast Poplock”. Snowfall gets slightly complicated with all the plots, but the acting and production is good and it is well worth binge watching.

I give it 6.7 out of 10 points.

"Snowfall" is well worth watching, the whole first season is available on HBO. Also I tried not to spoil it to much, (mainly because I am a bit lazy), but also because it gets boring when you know the whole plot before watching the show...
