It's simultaneously ambitious and lazy.
I know they're antonyms, but... it lays good ground work to make itself epic, and then lacks follow-through or conviction.
Every piece of the story that seems like it'll be interesting has no pay-off. Several episodes in a row had one think "This is starting to get good. The next episode is gonna be awesome".
It's like the song "Tribute", singing the praises of a show that doesn't exist. One that would be awesome if it did.
The show itself isn't awful as much as disappointing. It's like all of the teachers who told me I had so much potential that I was wasting got together and filled in during a writer's strike.
