Part one of the season finale, The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 19 "Hurt" was a lot of build of for what could be a very impactful finale next week. Shaun tries to rescue Lea. Melendez hurt himself in the easrthquake. And Morgan takes over the ER, with no hands.
Let's start with Shaun Murphy. After the earthquake, Shaun is part of the response team sent to help out at the brewery where Glassman, Melendez and Lea were when the earthquake hit. Once on site, Shaun has a one track mind, he is obsessed with finding Lea. After offhandedly diagnosing a lady with a object pinching her spinal cord, he heads deeper into the brewery to find Lea. After hear a faint cry for help and ignoring everyone telling him to stop, Shaun jumps down a hole in the rubble and starts searching for Lea. Once he reaches the voices he discovers it was not Lea who had been calling out but a different lady who was trapped in the basement impaled by some rebar in her shoulder and leg. Shaun radio's in the situation and starts assisting the injured woman, while this is happening Shaun is asked to leave his radio line open so that Dr. Lim can listen in. Meanwhile Lea is found safe and helped out, she ends up being able to hear Shaun on the radio as he starts to talk about his feelings for her. Shaun tells the woman he's helping how Lea has made him open up and fall in love but knows that he will never be able to make her feel the same way. It was very heartbreaking to watch this seen and understand just where Shaun is coming from.
Next up we have Melendez. During the earthquake he was hit by a beam, doesn't seem to be life threatening and he goes about helping people injured in the earthquake and actually performs a risky surgery right in the middle of the brewery. As he goes to leave, Melendez collapses, it seems his injury, which he ignored was much worse than he thought. We are left on a cliffhanger about what's going to happen to Melendez and in the preview things did not look good.
Lastly we had Dr. Morgan Reznick. She has just underwent surgery on her hands that will allow her to keep being a surgeon for the next 5-10 years but after that her hands will be ruined and she will live the rest of her life in pain. Her hands are wrapped and she isn't able to offer much aid. She wants to help and eventually convinces Andrews and Glassman to let her take over the ER while they attend to emergency surgeries. We end the episode with Morgan having missed a patient being pregnant and the patients Fallopian tube burst. Morgan is going to operate and risk her hands not having enough time to heal.
