Tonight was a strong and compelling episode of House of the Dragon.

A few thoughts and relatively modest reservations (note: SPOILERS):

  1. This episode continues the strategy of whitewashing Rhaenyra. Not only is she totally free of responsibility for the Blood and Cheese murder. She's even outraged by it.

  2. King Aegon II breaking his father's city model while shouting "I am the King!" is reminiscent of King Joffrey in Game of Thrones, who screams the same thing, and gets rebuked by Lord Tywin (who reminds him that a ruler who must say "I am the King" is "no true king”). In fairness, Aegon is understandably angry over the murder of his little son. While Joffrey was malevolent and cruel, Aegon is more impetuous, stupid, and incompetent.

  3. Otto Hightower gets a more favorable depiction here than in the book, as he seems genuinely outraged by Aegon's bad behavior, and may even regret his role in bringing him to the throne.

  4. With the important exception of Daemon, the other Black faction members also get favorable depictions here, and seem relatively sympathetic.

  5. Ser Erryk and Ser Arryk killing each other as one tries to assassinate Rhaenyra and the other defends her, was a more powerful scene than I expected it to be. The actors did a great job, and it helps that they're twins in real life.

  6. It's hard for me to understand why anyone likes or trusts Ser Criston Cole. But perhaps his rise to greater and grater power is meant to depict the characters' terrible judgment.

  7. There is more anger and outrage over Aegon's execution of the palace ratcatchers (he has them all executed, because he can't identify the one that killed his son) causes more outrage than is plausible in a quasi-feudal society where commoners' blood is considered cheap. While their family members might be mad, most other people wouldn't care much, and Otto Hightower probably wouldn't consider it a wrong or a major error.

  8. Despite the shows' herculean efforts to make Rhaenyra and the Blacks look relatively good, I'm not sure this strategy will succeed in the long run, as we go deeper into the civil war.
