[TV] Swamp Thing to get the DC TV Makeover

in tv •  7 years ago

We're set to get a new addition to the DC TV universe in the mutated form of Swamp Thing, landing on our screens via the new DC Universe stream service that Warner Bros. will launch later this year. This is great news for fans of the dark DC comic character, a humanoid/plant elemental creature, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson.

James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, and Michael Clear are executive producers, with Rob Hackett serving as co-producer. Verheiden and Dauberman are the one's writing the script. Here's the official synopsis:

"When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all."

This isn't the first TV venture into the supernatural from DC, as we've already had a single season of Constantine, as well as some supernatural plot threads in Arrow, but it could set the stage for further weird and surreal stories from the DC vaults.

I was first introduced to Swamp Thing in my childhood, catching reruns of the old 90s TV series which, if my memory is to be trusted, was rather quite good, as well as the 1982 Wes Craven film. I have vague memories of an animated show, but it's probably not worth looking into. The character really started to take off in the 70s, having first appeared in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971) in a stand-alone horror story set in the early 20th century. He more recently made an appearance in the highly rated Injustice 2 fighting game, which was praised by critics and players alike. Handled with care, this new show could be a really intriguing addition to the Arrowverse collection of shows.

This is awesome news. In fact, the whole DC Universe thing is great news as it will allow for more of this, more less mainstream characters to be brought to the moving pictures era.

I can honestly not wait for Swamp Thing. And then, hopefully, some more Animal Man again. It’s been some decades already now. DC Universe should make all that a possible again, with less issues over advertising revenue since subscription based.

I really enjoy the DC tv shows, they're far superior to the DC movie universe. I'm pretty glad they kept them totally separate.

I've got high hopes for this one myself! Should be a good chance for the DC guys to try something a little different to the rest of their portfolio of shows.

Not heard of Animal Man, his powers sound kinda similar to Vixens maybe?

Listen loud

Swamp Thing... one of those I missed! I might have a comic somewhere I'll check.

I wish I could upvote that even more, thank you so much for sharing that! I'd never heard of The Chameleons before, gonna have to go through their discography now. I'm surprised, they're from round here where I currently live.

If you find it, check it's value on ebay. You'd be surprised how much these comics can go for.

I'm out of voting power too! I kind of don't know what to do lol I guess write more and save up posts.
Glad you liked the Chameleons. This was played in the goth clubs a lot in the early 2000s even though it's little older from the 80s. That was kind of the way it was though because the genre is small so songs had longer lives and it wasn't necessarily about being "newest" in that genre. Plus all the best goth music was from the 80s lol

I just need to stop upvoting so much for a few days and let it recover, I don't think I've managed to give out a full 100% vote for months at this point.

I really enjoyed them, reminded me a bit of King Crimson in the second half of their career. I went to a few goth clubs in the mid-00s, but I never heard anything like this being played. I think the closest you'd get is Joy Division.

The 80s is probably the period that I listen to the least for some reason, but if you have any other suggestions like The Chameleons, I'm all ears!

I really like the posts are always well crafted.
I really liked the constantine series and a pity they only had a season

Thank you

If you enjoyed Constantine, there's a web series called Constantine City of Demons that you might enjoy. Here's hoping to a cameo from him in Swamp Thing!

Thank you, I'll search.

My first proper introduction to Swamp Thing was through the animated series, which only consists of five episodes. As a kid I loved it, bit it's not aged well.

Didn't know that had also been a TV series, I have however seen both the live-action movies and animated flick Justice League Dark which also features Swamp Thing.

Was it really only 5 episodes? I've got incredibly vague memories of maybe catching it on something like Cartoon Network growing up, but they could equally be false.

Yeah it was quite well received when the live action series aired, I certainly enjoyed it as a kid. That reminds me, I keep meaning to track down a copy of it to see how it stands up now.

Not seen Justice League Dark, so that'll have to go on my watch list. Only recently discovered the animated DC films, I think it was Batman: Gotham by Gaslight that I watch recently. Surprisingly good!

In the UK the animated series was shown on BBC One's Saturday morning programme Parallel 9, later replaced by Toxic Crusaders, and regularly shown on The Children's Channel (TCC).

There are some brilliant DC animated movies, but there are some equally bad ones. I've reviewed some of the more recent ones on by blog if you want to check them out. I've been watching through them all, 57 and counting. So far my top five are:

#5: Justice League: Gods and Monsters
#4: Wonder Woman
#3: Superman: Doomsday
#2: Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox
#1: Justice League: War

I'll be honest and say none of that rings any bells, apart from Toxic Crusaders I do remember that. I was quite lucky growing up, we had cable, so I tended to stick to CN and Nickelodeon.

I will definitely go check them out this afternoon, where would you recommend starting?

I'd start with the completely stand alone movies, like Batman: Year One, Wonder Woman, Batman: Assault on Arkham, if you have a workable knowledge of DC Justice League: Gods and Monsters and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox are great alternative reality stories. The End of Flashpoint Paradox also sets up a shared universe which encompasses a number of Batman, Justice League and Teen Titan movies.

Thank you mate! I'll get on that this evening, I've been watching all the live-action shows so I'm fairly familiar with flashpoint and the shared universes.

Yes!! I love Swamp Thing!

I even watched that ... just... awful 80's movie "Swamp Thing"

holy fuckballs.. you can watch the whole movie on youtube ahahaha

This is the Swamp Thing I love:

I really enjoyed the movie to be honest! But I'm a bit of a fan of camp crappy cinema. Didn't realise it was all just on YouTube though ha
