#14 TV shows: Stargate SG-1 - Let me open your gate...

Today we are going to review another TV Show, very famous, very famous, and with a big longevity: Stargate SG-1.

Oh yeah baby, don’t tell me you never watched one or more episodes of this show on a lonely and boring day of your life… It is almost impossible looking at how many diffusion, re-diffusion, re-re-diffusion and re-re-re diffusion there were about this show… DON’T LIE TO ME, you are lying to yourself!!! :)

As said before, this is a ten season show, but for the SG-1 part, four derived series followed this one: Stargate infinity, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe and the small child Stargate Origin in 2017.
You have to understand that it all started from one thing: Stargate, but not the TV Show, the movie.
Therefore the story of this TV Show is starting roughly one year after the action that happened during the movie.

It starts all while the Stargate program is almost abandoned and Colonel O’Neil is at retirement. But an extra terrestrial commando with similar uniform to the Râ Soldier, pass through the gate and invade the military base on earth.
General Hammond want to then send a nuclear bomb on Abydos. O’Neil confess then, that in his former mission, he did not made the gate explode on the planet but on Râ’s ship, which jump to the conclusion that Daniel Jackson is still alive guarding Abydos’ gate. After a few messages, O’Neil goes to the planet and Daniel confirmed that no Goa’ulxd has crossed the door. But Daniel then explained that there are more than a hundred different gates all over the universe, leading to a plenitude of new civilizations. But Daniel as a good scientist has discovered many coordinates that seem not working.
And THERE you have you plot, of course we, earthians, and our perpetuous curiosity, we want to know these other civilizations. That is the reason why, with the help of a few computers, a team of scientific recalculate the coordinates of the unvisited planets.
During these « explorations » the SG-1 team meet diverse population sometimes peaceful sometimes not at all and seeking for more and more power. In the good « side » you can find the Asgards, the Nox, but on the other side, the dark side, you can find people like Replicators or the ori.

You don’t have to have a very high cultural level to notice that you have plenty and plenty of historical and mythological clichés in this TV Show. Cold war, World wars, but egyptian, nordic and other legends can be found in this show as « inspiration » for the storyline. The last seasons are mainly centered on the Ori threat. It is mainly inspired by the inquisition period and the legend of king Arthur, especially with the key character Merlin.

As any 10 seasons show, there are a LOT of actors that appear in the various episodes. I am going to talk about the four main ones to my eyes: Richard Dean Anderson (my idol), Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks. Again, sorry for the other actors that parked this show…

Richard Dean Anderson, alias Mc Gy…oups no Colonel O’Neill

Oh yeah, you probably seen him a lot if you born in the eighties and famous Macgyver. In the movie Stargate (interpreted by Kurt Russel), O’Neil was a cold blooded military, a real killing machine completely suicidiary since his eight year old son killed himself playing with his gun. For the TV Show, they planned to modify this character like Harrison Ford would have played it. This character became a mix of Han Solo and Indiana Jones, with the sense of humor and the attitude of Richard Dean Anderson. This character became more and more sympathetic, always ready to the personal joke and of his inaptitude in the scientific domains.
Like any roles…. No one absolutely NO ONE can tell me something wrong about SIR Richard Dean Anderson, I love this guy, he reminds me so many souvenirs! To resume it all, he is juste the right guy, the right place.

Michael Shanks, aka Archeologist Daniel Jackson

Daniel is an egyptologist and archeologist. He is the voice of the consciousness and humanism to the all team. He is able to make the connection between the human history and the one found in the various planet visited.
Michael is a well renown actor in the TV Show and series and much less in the movie industry. Well I am not saying he did not play in any movie, on the contrary, but not many. You can see him in Arctic Blast, Red Riding Hood, Tactical Force or 13 eerie. But when we are talking about TV Show, this is a different subject… He played in various TV Show such as The outer Limits, CSI Miami, Stargate Universe, Burn Notice, Supernatural or Smallville. He also played in a lot of movie especially for TV.

Amanda Tapping, the sweet and beautiful Samantha Carter

In each and every TV Show, you have to find the sweet and tenderful touch of a woman. She is the scientific of the team, the voice of books and numbers. Her character wanted to be an astronaut in her childhood but she landed in a crazy team traveling throughout all of the space using a door. Almost the same :)
Amanda almost played in each Stargate saga, but she also played in some movies such as Booty Call, Stuck or Legend of Earthsea.

Christopher Judge or shall we say Teal’c the ET

Teal’C is a Jaffa. A species close to the human race, whose main purpose is to serve as incubator and army to the Goa’ulds. After the death of his father, and the fact that he has been banished to Cronos, Teal’C become the student of Bra’Tac one of the most famous Jaffas of all time. He decided to betray his master and god in hope to free his people from the Goa’ulds.
Christopher Judge is a great actor, of course I love his SG-1 performance but in almost everywhere I saw him too… You can see him in a lot of movies, of course all the Stargate movies but also in Cadence with Martin Sheen, Bird on Wire, Snow dog, Clash of the Empire, so many many others.
But he is also one of the only actor who played with Richard Dean Anderson in another TV Show: Mac Gyver ;)

Well to conclude with this show, there are not much to talk about, it is a good show, a good plot, good actors and well in general you have a great time watching this show. Of course you have to like Sci-fi you have to realize that the graphical effects are a little bit outdated. But in general, I recommend this show with absolutely no doubts.
