Spoiler Warning for all of 8 seasons of Game of Thrones and the books.
Game of Thrones season 8 is now over and so is the entire show. With all the criticism that I have towards the show, and I have a lot of criticism, I am mostly sad that it is over. When everything is said and done it is still one of the most popular shows on TV and one of the best. You can't deny that. It's a fun experience to watch a show that half of the world is watching, it is almost a uniting experience.
Despite the fact that it has been a fun ride, it was also a fast ride. Too fast. Remember when they split book 3 into two seasons? They needed like 3 more seasons of character development to make the finale season make sense. I can buy Danny going crazy. I totally can. In the TV show Danny was never as good and kind like she is in the books, and even in the books you can totally see that she is going down hill slowly. Slowly. Very slowly. We don't see the five days in which Danny does not eat and is depressed. We don't see the slow decline in her sanity. It looks like a split second decision to burn down all of Kings Landing. I know it felt like it was out of character for her, but it was just rushed.
The Night King, who was a major threat from the first season, the first episode, turned out to be not that hard to kill, which was disappointing. I was sure he was going to attack Kings Landing first or most of the Seven Kingdoms at once. I mean the whites have no problem going underwater since they don't need to breathe, in the books. That sort of attack would have been much more interesting to watch and more logical since they have the numbers. It felt like a wasted good story and wasted great action.
Prophecies not being fulfilled I can understand. They always were a difficult pain in the ass to interpret. Nothing is ever clear cut in prophecies.
The ending of the characters also makes sense if it had more time to be developed. Arya decided she was done with a life of killing. We kind of know what's west of Westroes as one character in the books tried to find out and came back sick and crazy so there is nothing good there. But it is a life of freedom. A life without killing and not a life of a lady. A life she deserves, if we had more time to see her choose this life.
Jon chooses a life with the wildings who have become his true family, because she show barley showed us how he still doesn't get along with Sansa on a daily bases.
Sansa being queen in the north totally works for the character who always wanted to rule and was pretty darn good at it. But the north men will have a hard time to accept a female ruler, but we didn't get to see that. Just switch to the happy end.
Bran is a tricky one. He really wants nothing, so perhaps he is most fit to rule, but his character has been mostly useless, unless like me you consider some of his actions harmful (you know like passing the wall when you know that the magical link between him and the Night King will make the Night King be able to pass it, like he got into the magical cave). We don't get to see the meaning behind his powers and purpose of them beyond fighting the Night King. There is so much wasted good story here.
Game of Thrones is still television perfection. It was just rushed to the ending. The plot and dialogue suffered for it. But the set design, hair and makeup and musical score are perfection. The show ends with House Stark personal score playing in the background and that says it all. It is so powerful and beautiful and it fits. There may be no Iron Throne, but House Stark has won the game in the end. Partly because of the magic in their blood. So, I am both disappointed and satisfied.
