"Toss a coin to your Witcher/ O’ Valley of Plenty" after watching the first season of the The Witcher, well good luck trying to get this song out of your head. It just pops into my head occasionally for no apparent reason. Also, I really liked this show. It was super fun and entertaining.

No, this is not the next Game of Thrones because the show isn't trying to be the next Game of Thrones. In fact, the books that Andrzej Sapkowski wrote came out a few years before the first Song of Ice and Fire book came out and they have nothing in common, other than belonging to the fantasy genre. Just to make it clear, the show is based on the books, the computer games are sequels to the books.

The show follows three main characters:

Geralt of Rivia played by Henry Cavill. He is a Witcher. Witchers aren't born, they are created through painful and difficult process to become enhanced humans who are monster hunters. Though Geral has a plot through the season, his plot is also monster of the week sort of story that is combined into his greater arc. Also, Henry Cavill is brilliantly cast in this role. He is hot, tough and not nice and liable which is great in this role. He is doesn't talk much, but when he is mostly grumpy. Cavill is a perfect fit for Geral, as much as Geral is a perfect fit for him. As much as Geral wishes he could, Geralt cannot escape his destiny. Jaskier the bard tags along on his adventures and the song is definitely worth it.

Yennefer of Vengerberg played by Anya Chalotra. Yennefer is a hunchback who is born to a poor family who despises her. She discovers her magical powers and is recruited to become a sorceress. Don't think this is Hogwarts, there is nothing fun, pleasant and super magical here. Magic comes with a heavy price. Yennefer's plot is really interesting as she defies almost all expectations of female characters in fantasy. Almost.

Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon or Ciri -the Lion Cub of Cintra – played by Freya Allan, Freya Allan did the best that she could, but boy was her plot the least interesting one. Sure, through her we get to learn about the bigger conflicts, wars between kingdom and prophecies and her potential magical powers. But in the end everything happens to her, and she doesn't really do anything, but run a lot. I really hope that her plot will improve in the next season.

Each of these characters has its own plot. And it's a minor spoiler that will help you understand the show better when you start. There are three different timelines, each character's plot happens in a different one. This is the only spoiler I knew going into the show and it helped me understand everything better.

A big plus for the show is that there is no exposition. You just get thrown into this world and learn it as the characters go. Who's a good guy, who's bad, what's the magic structure in the world, nothing is fed to you with a spoon and I like it.

It is just a fun show to watch. But, most of the season is build up for the next season. I kept hitting the next button after I watched the last episode and couldn't believe that this is how it ends. But it does. Now we have to wait another year and a half for the next season. I am considering reading the books, but I am not sure if I want the spoilers or not. I'll probably read them in the end. But for now "Toss a coin to your Witcher" and meme on. Because this show produced a lot of memes and online jokes so you can enjoy that for now.

I enjoyed your review. I think it was well written. You tell the story, you're honest and you offer your own observations.
By the way, Game of Thrones cannot be repeated; if a series is to be created it must be under new parameters just as Game of Thrones did in its first season.
It was a pleasure reading you, greetings @readingdanvers

@marcybetancourt thank you so much for your kind replay!
I think that by Game of Thrones they meaning a fantasy story that is a cultural phenomenon. But cultural phenomena are hard to create.

Congratulations on your Curie, @readingdanvers!
I started watching The Witcher but only got a few episodes in. I love Geralt. He was hired to kill a woman, and she in turn was trying to hire him to kill the same guy who was out to kill her, as I recall. It was clever. The hunchback girl stole my heart! I never saw any of Game of Thrones, nor have I read any of these books (and playing video games, no, never in my life have I done that). My husband won't watch fantasy or sci-fi and I'd rather read than watch TV alone (that could and probably should change). Thank you for your review! I'm inspired to watch more now!

Thank you! Since Game of Thrones ended so poorly I don't recommand. But yiou should finish this show. It's short and fun.

I DID watch ig @readingdanvers (any kin to Supergirls alter ego?) It took me a bit to get into it (I had no referral, I was just dead bored with everything I had CHOSEN on Netflix to watch, and this came up as something LIKE what I had been watching)
I had binge watched "The Elfstones of Shanarra"( or was the chronicles) I read ALL those books back 30 yrs ago, and was excited to see them on the screen, but a bit let down with some of the missing plot elements, but this was made up for by the great visual aids.
I digress.
I look forward to more of "The Witcher" I thought Cirilla was a mystery in development, and I don't want to give away any of my conclusions, so as to be a spoiler.
Loved your review.

Danvers is for Carol Danver, a.k.a., Captain Marvel, not Kara Danvers. Thank you for your kind word.
I know what will happen to Cirilla, sort of, I just didn't find it interesting for now.
Books are always better than the show, which is why I still haven't read them. I probably will at some point.

I've been tempted to try and read the "Song of Ice and Fire" (or whatever- Game of Thrones) books. I binged watched as I didn't have access to HBO when it was first playing, when I got Netflix just before the final season.
I thought the end was rather anticlimactic.
So good morning @readingdanvers aka Captain Mar-Vel 😉
