“Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And do you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It's freedom from fear. It's a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing is OK. You are OK.”
Don Draper, S01E01
Man Men is a smart, sexy and fairly dark drama that is set mainly in the 1960s, and follows the ad men of a fictional advertising firm in New York. Without a doubt the big daddy is Don Draper, played by the amazing Jon Hamm, who most of the series focuses on. He starts off as a highly talented creative director at the firm Sterling Cooper, and later going on to be a founding member in another firm.
At the time, many of the cast were relative unknowns in the acting business, however they have since go on to become some of the biggest names today. The writing for this show is second to none, and the high calibre acting really helps to boost the already impressive script. Some of the names you might have heard from this show include Elisabeth Moss, Alison Brie, the aforementioned Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery and Jared Harris.
The show isn't just about the clever and witty ad campaigns created by these guys, but also tackles topics like the social prejudices of the time period, as well as sexual politics and minorities of all kinds trying to make it in the mid-20th century when powerful white men were at their peak. It's not an easy show to watch, especially to begin with, but after just a few episodes your patience will be rewarded and you'll be hooked.
Mad Men Season 1 Trailer
Show creator Matthew Weiner has said that his took a lot of inspiration for the visual feel to this show from Alfred Hitchcock, and I think it shows. This show was never going to look on the recent past with rose tinted spectacles, but instead wanted to show a more gritty view of our societies history.
I've got to admit, I still haven't finished the second half of the final season but from what I've read the final episodes were fairly well received and certainly didn't shit the bed and spoil the show, like many say Lost did. If you're a fan of shows like The Wire and Breaking Bad, this is definitely one to add to your watchlist.
Did you watch Mad Men when it was airing? or are you gonna give it a shot now? I think I'll rewatch the first half of season 7 again this next week and finally finish this thing, although I hate it when shows end!
