If you’re interested in simulation theory, in the possibility that our world is just a game, then you should absolutely watch “Westworld”.
Initially, Westworld is a theme park for the rich where they pay $40,000 a day to do whatever they want to the “hosts”- robots that are developed to be extremely human like. However, the hosts are glitching, and we are drawn into the world where they and their creators are vying for power.
Some of the philosophical questions I jotted down as I watched:
What makes us human?
If an “object” displays values that are higher level than those we display, is it therefore more human?
If something walks talks and acts human, and a person commits violence against it, then is that person less human, or at least mentally ill?
Some of my favorite quotes
“A fiction which like all great stories is rooted in truth”
“In here we were gods, and you merely our guests”
“It’s a beautiful trap, and it’s inside of us”
“Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality?”
The show regularly alludes to both Shakespeare and the Bible. The depth and complexity of this dystopian future that doesn’t seem too out of reach is intense. I may just have to watch the whole thing again just to catch some of the nuances. Season 3 is due out in 2020.

I actually just got the first season on loan from the library this week. Alas, the discs were damaged and so I had to give up on it. The brief bit I did watch left me with only one assumption. Cruelty may make one feel powerful but it is never very attractive regardless of the level of humanity assigned to the one we are cruel too. Certainly, Dolores inspired more empathy in me than her tormentors and those who would pay to torment. Humanity was quite beside the point.
