The prompt was: Two kids discover an ancient artifact in their backyard, but what does it do?
I thought about Lovecraft for this one.
Chiggers and Ticks

Jimmy held his breath, gripping the toy pistol to his chest. Mark was out there, just behind the trees and bushes, but this wasn’t his backyard. He didn’t know all the secrets. Didn’t know the paths through the scrub brush beyond Dad’s tool shed. Jimmy did, and he could hear his friend creeping a mile away, breaking tree branches and stepping on dead leaves.
