The stuff Bari Weiss revealed yesterday was already public knowledge. When Jack Dorsey denied that Twitter shadow bans, he was relying on this definition. Twitter explicitly said what they were doing. This wasn't some cover-up.

I'm not sure people would prefer the alternatives. These methods are used to avoid account suspensions and to improve user experience. And without any content moderation Twitter would become Gab fast. Musk knows this himself. That's why he announced this exact existing policy as some sort of new direction for the company under his leadership. He just wants to reshape the contours of what is and isn't acceptable under that policy.

I've been spouting off to anyone who will listen that the signal:noise ratio has been known since the earliest days of the Internet. What Twitter did was try and tackle a pervasive and persistent problem in a very interesting manner. Could it have flaws? Sure. What doesn't? Just wish these people would flock back to Little Green Footballs and Stormfront.
