280 Characters and It All Feels The Same…

in twitter •  7 years ago

When they first announced they would double the maximum length of a tweet, I thought they were crazy.

People immediately took advantage of did some weird spam stuff. They typed out entire sentences vertically. Like this:

V
E
R
T
I
C
A
L

And in the process of doing that, you had to scroll down the page forever to get past the tweet. There have been a few exploits like that in recent days. But now that the big twitter update to 280 characters has gone out site wide, it all looks the same.

Nothing to Say

It’s strange that there isn’t much to do with the extra characters. Nothing is different now. It feels awkward to try and come up with some super long tweet to take advantage of the space. For such a big decision, it feels… like nothing.

Twitter claims that there is a difference. They say that people are less inclined to max out their tweets now - less than 1% of tweets will use all characters as opposed to 9% in the old days.

I think this is one of those changes that pays off later on. In a few days when I come up with a great 200 character tweet, I’ll realize that the update is good. Right now I’m completely indifferent because my tweeting experience feels exactly the same.

What are you doing with your extra characters?

Is your twitter experience better or worse now? Do you see a lot of long tweets in your timeline? I wonder if everybody’s experience is as mundane as mine.

The most interesting question is: Will Twitter be better now? I think that conversations might be more productive with a little extra room to make points. 140 characters was brutal when you had to respond to somebody. 280 is a lot better for conversation.

The first thing I did with the extra characters was this: Eͮͪ͊̀̇͊͂̂ͮ҉̴͎̗̘͖̠̣͚̭͓͎̘̞̪̪̬̱͟͢n̶̲̘̺̝̭͚̱̬͓̪̻̤̗͖͎̯ͫ̀̽̐̎͗̾͛ͨͫ̔̀ͬͯ͗ͦ̚͝j̧̡̝͇̞̺͛̔ͫͣͭo̢̢̩̝̬͗͑̏͊́ỷ̀̉͐́̽ͦͦ́҉̖̠̭̝̫̯͞ ̡̪͇͚̘͔͕̯ͦ͒̍͋̇̆̎̐ͬ͗̌̍͑̅̈̀͌̕t̫͕̠͓͙͔͉̹͈̺̺̜̘͓̗͕͎̒ͫ̊ͩͦ̅̃͗͛͋̽̾̚̚͟h̴ͪͩͫͮͪͧͭ̽ͩ̈҉̖͇̘͈̹͚̳͚̭͈͟ȉ̶̧̩͉̥̂͊ͨ̈́ͭ͜͝s̃ͨͨ̌͛̍͐͒͏̮̮͔͜͞.̧̙͎͉̺̠̙̓̓̂ͤͣ͛ͮ͛ͪͪͫͭ̿ͧ͗͊͌͛͢͡ͅ

I'm sorry for doing it again here, I just find it funny.
I don't tweet much anymore so the character count won't affect me much.

Hey man, long time no talk, what's up? I listened to Bloomer the other day when I got my internet back, it's pretty good, I think prosperity frog is my favorite track so far.

[Actually, that zalgo text doesn't look as bad on steemit, on twitter it can end up covering up parts of the tweets above and below it]

Hello dagda, I'm sure a lot of people are confused by text glitches like that lol. It reminds me of my very early internet days when people were finding ways to abuse the GameFAQs forum. It always seemed magical.

Thanks for listening to Bloomer dude! I am glad you enjoyed Prosperity Frog, that one is a favorite for me too. I'm so glad that record is finally out

I find it hard to care. I played with Twitter a few years back, but rarely visit now. I just don't have the time. I know it can be useful for some people to reach their audience.

I've seen you on there occasionally! It's probably better to not be addicted to Twitter. I can't stop refreshing the damn thing.

I find it an interesting development - I have found it hard to cram my messages into the 140 chars - however 280 seems perfect with space to spare - Though I had begun chaining tweets if I had more to say

Chain-tweeting is addictive. At first you say you are just doing it this one time. Then it's whenever you are drunk. Next thing you know, you are chain-tweeting before you even get out of bed every morning.

I'm already liking this update more and more! Count me in for #team280 any day.

Yeah and the larger format is tedious, I like to shoot through the tweets... or follow a link for more, not get it all shoved down your throat on your phone... and the ads!!!!

But do you see a lot of long tweets now? If anything I think the average message on twitter seems shorter because people aren't doing those 2+ tweet chains to say stuff.

Mastodon defaults to 500 characters and it is decentralized! :D

Yeah but are famous people on there? I like twitter because I can interact with so many people and watch the conversations play out. I feel like Mastodon will be more just random people tweeting about stuff

I guess that depends on how we define famous

People who I have heard of lol

Takes me twice as long to read now. :/

Only if everybody uses a lot more characters all of the time! So far most of the tweets in my feed are still less than 140 characters.

nice post brother
