Нова надбана влада не кращим чином позначилася на колись суворій дисципліні ордена. З'явилася навіть приказка "пити як тамплієр". Але могутність ордена ніхто не посмів би поставити під сумнів.
Згідно з декретом Ватикану, над орденом не було іншої влади, крім Папи Римського, та й він вкрай рідко втручався в їхні справи. Жоден християнський
король не був владний над тамплієрами. Однак доля вже готувала ордену важкі випробування.
Протягом десятиліть тамплієри і інші хрестоносці безуспішно намагалися утримати колись завойовану Святу Землю, але сарацинам з талановитим воєначальником Саладіном поступово вдалося витіснити християн з Єрусалиму і відкинути їх на узбережжя.
У 1191 році за напором непропорційно більшої сили пала остання християнська фортеця в Святій Землі. Обложені тамплієри відмовилися здаватися і билися на смерть. Біблійна земля знову опинилася у владі сарацинів, а тамплієри остаточно перебралися в Європу.
