Poem

I Negro
I am black..
In bondage..
chained to the deck.
age over age..
I learned nothing else
But the swiftness of his belts...
I Negro...
never knew
how it felt...
to run..
in the open wind
or suck mother's breast..
I am black..
sun scorched..
Battered
with black whips...
Thirsty..
and hungry
With no hope for food
Or drink..
I negro
stood and watched him...
Banging..
on my daughter's hips
I am black
Sold..
branded with a name
Bold..
on my chest.
so I know..
I do not own myself
I negro
witnessed him
throw my father overboard
because he was tired..
and needed to rest.
I am black
I lay dead
on the street...
Flat...
day by day
a new body of me
Is shot by the cops
or either handed in cuffs
because
I negro.
Is trying..to find myself
