Earlier this summer a fight between current Middleweight champion Mishael Bisping and returning UFC Welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre. Bisping who had seemingly been ducking the top contenders came under heavy fire for taking the fight instead of fighting top MW contender like Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Yoel Romero. on 11 May 2017, Dana White announced the fight had been cancelled.
As all this was taking place Robert Whittaker, at the time a rising MW, gets the upset victory over Jacare thus removing him from title contention. An Interim title bout is then scheduled between Robert Whittaker and the no. 1 MW contender Yoel Romero. Whittaker once again gets the victory thus becoming next in line to fight for the title. However, he managed to injure himself during the bout thus removing both himself and Romero from title contention.
With no clear available contender in the MW division the bout with GSP was once again announced and is expected to take place at UFC 217. Bisping will get his money fight after all. Can't help but feel like the whole situation is just hilarious.
