It's 4am here at Steemfest in Amsterdam and the party continues... for some! As I've managed to find a way to watch UFC 205. Where there is a will, there is a way!
UFC 205 is the first time that a UFC event will take place in New York. All the action will go down in the "mecca of prize fighting", Madison Square Garden. The UFC have put on a stellar card, arguably the best ever, fitting for the occasion. With three world titles on the line and four world champions in action.
[If anyone at Steemfest wants to watch it - let me know on steemit.chat or in the comments below. Free entry with a wristband! ;0)]
I'll try to keep a live feed below.
The story so far...
Prelim highlights
Khabib Nurmagomedov defeats Michael Johnson (3rd round submission)
Despite getting rocked in the first round, Nurmagomedov dominates Johnson with his grappling and ground game. It has to be a toss up between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson for who will fight for the Lightweight title next.
Frankie Edgar defeats Jeremy Stephens (Unanimous Decision)
Frankie Edgar used his superior wrestling to out-grapple Stephens and grind out a win. Stephens almost had Edgar out on his feet in the second round but it wasn't enough to stop "The Answer" taking this match convincingly.
Main event
Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington
Pennington used her jab to dominate Tate in the stand-up in rounds 1 and 2. Tate needs something special to turn this around...
Tate tried to pull guard and throw up some triangles in the third round but it wasn't enough as Pennington continued to overpower her one-time Ultimate Fighter coach.
Pennington wins by unanimous decision
Post fight.... Miesha Tate announces her retirement. Surely a future hall-of-famer, whose contribution to woman's MMA cannot be understated. Good luck Miesha.
Next up...
Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero
I'd give Round 1 to Weidman. Not enough activity from Romero...
Round 2 started with Weidman peppering Romero with strikes but an eye-poke from Weidman seem to wake Romero up and he dominated Weidman with his wrestling.
Wow! Nasty nasty knock out for Yoel Romero at the beginning of Round 3.. Flying knee. Connects with Weidman's temple. Fight over. I just hope there is no permanent damage to the American.
Romero wins by KO, Round 3
Up Next...
Joanna Jędrzejczyk (c) vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz
Kowalkiewicz stands in her corner like a mischievous kid that has just been told off. Jędrzejczyk prowls like a caged tiger..
Should be interesting....
Round 1, Kowalkiewicz stalks Jędrzejczyk however Jędrzejczyk beats her to the punch every time they are in range. More competitive in the clinch but Round 1 to the Champ.
More of the same in Round 2, it could be a long 25 minutes for Kowalkiewicz... 2-0 Jędrzejczyk.
Round 3. 3-0 Jędrzejczyk. Kowalkiewicz can do nothing to stop Joanna's momentum.
Whoa! Kowalkiewicz lands with a massive right hand in the middle of the fourth to turn the momentum of the fight. Does she have enough in her tank to turn this around? 3-1.
What heart from both ladies. Karolina Kowalkiewicz is like the baby-faced terminator. She just keeps coming forward. I'm giving her the fifth round because she's a badass. However the night surely belongs to the champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.
Jędrzejczyk wins by unanimous decision
Next up....
Tyron Woodley (c) vs. Stephen Thompson
Big Round 1 for Woodley. Was able to get a takedown off a leg kick and do damage from top position.
Telling Round 2 for Thompson. Dominating the Stand-up.
1-1...
Thompson winning the standup exchanges however Woodley still dangerous....
2-1 Thompson
One of the best rounds I've seen! Woodley had Thompson out on his feet. Yet Wonderboy survived a barage and a tight guillotine to end the round on top.
2-2
Round 5 for Thompson. The only question is whether Woodley won Round 4 by 10-8 to squeeze a draw!
Waiting on the judges...
Whatever happens these two should go again!!
Wow... I didn't have that???
Woodley wins by split decision
Correction.... Not from me, but Bruce Buffer read the result wrong!!!
Majority draw! Woodley retains his title.
Okay a little time to explain the confusion before the main event. The score cards were 47-47 (draw), 47-47(draw) and 48-47 (Woodley). Bruce Buffer declared Woodley the winner by majority decision. However that scorecard is in fact a majority draw. Bruce Buffer announced a correction and declared a majority draw. Woodley keeps his belt.
One side note - I get the 47-47 scorecards. I don't understand the 48-47 to Woodley as I had Thompson winning Round 2,3 and 5 with Woodley winning 1,4. The only question was whether Round 4 was a 10-8. Either way a great fight that would be good to see again.
Next up....
Eddie Alvarez (c) vs. Conor McGregor
McGregor comes out to 50 Cent... I Get Money ("I Run New York")!...
Alvarez greeted by a chorus of boos...
Big first ground for McGregor. He touched Alvarez 3 times with his "kiss-of-death" of a left hand. Alvarez hit the floor three times. Alvarez survives to Round 2. Will Conor gas?
2-0 (10-8 round)
Oh Shit!.... McGregor IS THE REAL DEAL!... EMPATHIC WIN OVER EDDIE ALVAREZ. A sweet left hand counter followed by a right-left-right combination. And it's all over in the second!
CONOR MCGREGOR - TWO BELT HOLDER - FEATHERWEIGHT + LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION!!
It's 7.30am, here in Amsterdam. Time for breakfast I think.
Sleep? What's that??
Very cool...
