It does seem that being really funny looking, even downright ugly, doesn't have to get in your way if you're going to be an actor, but with the actresses it's another story. There are a few homely women who made great careers playing "characters": Edna Mae Oliver, Agnes Moorhead (who was actually not homely when she was young)... Bette Davis was still great after she began to look like the side of concrete wall hit by a bus; Gloria Swanson is downright hideous in Sunset Boulevard...
