The independent candidate in the West Midlands mayor elections is standing in the general election

in uk •  6 months ago

Akhmed Yakoob, a lawyer, will be standing in the General Election in Birmingham Ladywood, which is currently held against by Labour's Shadow Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

He's got a very good chance of taking the seat. In the West Midlands mayor elections, Yakoob got 40.1% of the vote, compared to Labour on 27.9% and Conservatives on 23.1%.

Of course turnout was much lower in the West Midlands mayor election compared to what it will be in the general election. Labour will also try to squeeze the Conservative vote.
