London Attacker Appeared In British "The Jihadist Next Door" Terrorism Documentary In 2016

in uk •  7 years ago

One of the terrorists who attacked London on Saturday, killing seven people and wounding dozens more, had been previously known to police and MI5, the Financial Times reported. Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, had been investigated in 2015, the same year he was filmed praying in front of an ISIS flag at Regent’s Park in 2015, according to the Financial Times.

Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer, assistant commissioner Mark Rowley admitted that Butt had been investigated in 2015 and that a member of the public had also called the anti-terrorism hotline to raise concerns. But Rowley said no evidence had been found of attack planning or criminality and the investigation dropped into the “lower echelons” of priorities for counter terrorism investigators, the FT reported.

The footage, eventually broadcast on Channel 4 in a documentary called "The Jihadist Next Door" on British jihadis, identified the Pakistani-born Butt as a zealous Islamist. The footage showed him in the company of leading figures from the now-banned al-Muhajeroune network.

Police named the second attacker as Rachid Redouane, 30, who claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan. He was not known to police and MI5 before the attack on Saturday.

Rowley said that he had seen "nothing to show that a poor decision has been made," according to the FT, adding that the second idividual was known to police.

The report raised concerns about police and intelligence agencies' abilities to monitor suspected radical Islamist cells in the UK. Also on Monday, the Telegraph reported that local police had been monitoring a cell of suspected terrorists in East London - that report followed the arrest on Sunday of 12 people, among them seven women – all of them in Barking and other parts of east London, where at least one of Saturday’s killers was believed to have lived. Those arrested were aged from 19 to 60.

So far, the perpetrators of all three terror attacks in the UK this year had been known to police, raising questions about police and intelligence agencies' abilities to keep the UK safe from terror attacks. That includes twenty-three year old Salman Abedi, the perpetrator of last week's attack at Manchester Arena, which killed at least 22 people attending a concert by American singer Ariana Grande. Khalid Masood, Westminster attacker, was in a pool of  "former subjects of interest."

Before this weekend's attack, the Times of London reported that intelligence agencies had identified 23,000 potential jihadis living in Britain, of this 'pool' of potential terrorists, 3,000 are suspected of posing an “imminent threat” and are being investigated accordingly.

It's not clear whether the attackers who carried out this weekend's strikes are part of a wider network, the FT reported.

looks like their spying was good for nothing.

It's obvious to me that elements of the 'secret services' are enabling much of the terrorism for political and powergame agendas that they control. Check out this whistleblowing UK parliamentary candidate (who i vaguely know) get shut down in an allegedly open part of the democratic process just for bringing up the fact that UK sells weapons to ISIS supporting Saudi Arabia: https://steemit.com/news/@ura-soul/uk-home-secretary-shuts-down-whistleblower-political-candidate-s-speech-about-uk-arms-sales-to-isis-supporting-saudi-arabia

There are 3,000 that are an imminent threat!? Wow, I truly hope this madness is stopped.

Good post. Shame they are trying to make us live in fear.

Is this guy trying to be a copy cat of the orlando shooter I wonder. I guess we can be looking evil in the face and not even know it.

Thank you very much for this information! @ZeroHedge

So these guys are actually sleeper bombers waiting to be activated?

I think China is now the safest place for people to trade with each other, entertainment, no religious and racial conflict. It's not better to be without faith. We Chinese only believe in money! We work hard for money, not extremes.

There is tons of religious and racial conflict in China. Anti religious government sentiment, falun gong, fear of Muslims from xinjiang, blatant discrimination of blacks and other dark skinned Asians, not to mention the many other problems that are caused by the economy as a whole.

What you said is not what happened to us at all. They dare not make trouble in China, but only in foreign countries, Aukwu Jan Viv. China is very strict in management and lax in foreign management. So they will only make trouble around you, let you imagine that China is very chaotic, but in fact, we are very safe. You were cheated by them.

I wasn't cheated by anyone. I've lived in China for years. I see the facade the government puts on whenever global events occur. China is very strict, I agree with that. Such is the modus operandi of a fairly oppressive country. Now don't misunderstand me, I have a great time living in China and doubly so for my pocketbook, but to claim China is safe for locals or foreigners alike is ignorance. I've seen firsthand local friends fined by corrupt police officers for things they didn't do, hve property or their businesses taken by the government even if they didnt break or violate any laws, the persecution of anyone who speaks poorly about the leadership. Every country has these problems so no sense in misinforming the community about a country that has a lot of good along with a lot of bad.

Don´t work hard for money!!! just buy a bitcoin ! ;-)

In the UK you have to commit a crime before you can be incarcerated or deported, that should not change.
We can suspect and watch these people but that is all. Terrorism has been with us in the UK my whole life, hysteria adds nothing valuable.
Some attacks will inevitably get through, its just a numbers game.

If you were a religious zealot bent on the destruction of another culture's way of life would you willingly participate in a documentary that labeled you as a terrorist? To me, that seems rather counter-intuitive as it puts you not only on the radar of the intelligence services but you also become known as an extremist in the minds of the general public. This would make your end goal much more difficult to achieve.

Now, if you were an intelligence agency asset, well that would be another story altogether.

I'd also like to point out something that most people reporting on this story keep neglecting to mention. Khuram Shahzad Butt appeared in the documentary for all of one minute, if even.

Also, the documentary is called The Jihadis Next Door. It's not a very important thing to get wrong but it really irks me when somebody can't put in the effort to find the name of the documentary they're reporting on.

One last thing, up until now the documentary was on Netflix over here, I watched it only two weeks ago in a friend's house. As a documentary it was alright, nothing special, but it screamed intelligence agency psy-op to me.
