On a related note I often hear Tankies say that without Crimea and specifically the base at Sevastopol, Russia would be cut off from the Black Sea. But it is simply not true. They've got plenty of access from their own territory and Novorossiyk in particular has its own naval base. It was going to be where the Black Sea Fleet was going to relocate once Ukraine ended the Sevastopol lease.

Ousted President Yanukovych extended the Sevastopol lease in 2010 as part of the Kharkiv Accords, in violation of the Ukrainian Constitution. This action would be part of the treason charges filed against him after Maidan.
