Ukraine has a nice rail system. It isn't particularly fast, but it is extensive and affordable. It makes it easy to travel between cities and towns in the large country. There are beds throughout, so you can take an overnight trip and sleep during the trip. The rail has class systems, so you can pay accordingly from the relatively cheap to the more expensive. The lowest class is called platskart and is an open communal layout where the lower seats turn into beds. I usually rode the train in platskart. It wouldn't be unusual for strangers to share food or drink during the ride.

Between the rail system and marshrutkas, it is really easy to travel both intracity and intercity in the country, relatively affordably. Many Ukrainians don't own a car, so public transportation is pretty widespread and accessible.
