...Or even Wine. Ahem.

So I was wondering about what to post about today, because let’s face it, I’ve been in an office all day doing my funky thing (which isn’t, I’m afraid to say, all that funky!) and then this evening I’ve been writing and pottering around on Steemit… so yeah… not exactly the most grippy-est of gripping reads…

Then I remembered I haven’t told you about my gallivant to the wine tasting a couple of weeks ago. Not that I’m promising that it will be any more gripping than watching paint dry… but at least it will give you the chance to have a good point and laugh at me.

The Wine Tasting

So, it was very specifically a Rosé wine tasting in the posh wine shop in town… and I was only going as the poster had caught my eye so my lovely OH bought me a ticket to go as a surprise. I went on my own. Dear reader… I was petrified.

Here’s a couple of things you need to know about me before we go any further:

  1. I don’t often drink alcohol. Maybe once or twice a month- and then only a single glass or pint.
  2. I know nothing at all about wine. At all. I don’t even like shop bought red very much, and I can’t stand white. Pink is my only way to go.
  3. Because of point 1. I have next to no tolerance. One glass and I’m away with the fairies.

Okay- so in I walk, all on my own… and I’m early (always clinically early…) I’m nervous as I’m completely out of my comfort zone and my depth. But I’m not the first there- hurrah! There’s a couple who have already arrived and are playing with this cool machine at the back of the shop. You basically pay to load your card with credit, and then press buttons to decant tasters from the bottles in the machine… ranging from 80p for a sip to £££££ for a glass. They were decanting, swirling, sticking their noses deep in their glasses… it seemed like hours until they took a sip! They knew what they were doing… ohhh no. This was bad.

Soon the posh little back room with the high stools (health and safety risk or what?!) was full with 12 of us – each with a glass poised, ready for action. We were to try 5 wines. There was I thinking they’d give us a sip of each as we went along. How wrong I was.

The guy talked to us about grapes, and how rosé is made from the same grapes as red, with the skins used to add just a touch of colour… it was all very interesting, and he talked with a lot of passion. He knew his grapes. Thing was, they filled my glass a long way up with wine number 1.

Wine 1

I swirled and sniffed like the rest of them… I sipped. I didn’t add to the discussion as I was too busy wondering where I could pour some of the glass away… nowhere. Damn. It was okay, just a bit sour. Pretty bottle though. They were talking about strawberries and cream. Nah. Not me. I finished the glass- because that’s the polite thing to do.

I very quickly stopped being nervous and started joining in at this point. Ahem.

Wine 2

A bit better. Less sour. Bottle not quite as cute. Swirl and sniff and swig.

Posh wine bloke: “What are you getting?”
Me: “bananas”
Posh wine bloke: “??”
Rest of group: rolling around laughing at/with me (by this point, I don’t care!)

Glug and the glass is gone.

Wine 3

Now this smells yummy.

Posh wine bloke: “dare I ask”
Me: “Cucumbers and cut grass”
Posh wine bloke: “??” pause. sniff. “huh” swirl. sniff. “erm. yes. you’re right”
Rest of group: look wise and knowledgeable as they sniff and swirl and agree.
Me knobs … glug glug yum.

It went back down hill from there. It’s now quite an exciting thing to stay perched on the high stool…

Wines 4 & 5

The last two wines are the expensive bubbly ones. The first is so grim (yum yum go the rest of the group) that I can’t actually drink it and pour it unceremoniously into the glass of the guy sat next to me as soon as he has room. I think he was pleased, I don’t really remember. It tasted like off nail polish with fizz added. The last one was ridiculously expensive. I finished the glass but… it was not nice… but the posh wine guy looked like he would cry if I donated the contents again.

So- all in all- I had a very fun evening, got completely sozzled, learned that not all tastes are made equal and that it is absolutely fine to prefer different things to everyone else and that I shouldn’t stop being me just because I’m around people who aren’t used to my more unusual qualities ;)

Also there was info about wine- but frankly, I was having far too much fun to remember all (any) of that.

Until tomorrow my lovelies,
Eveningart x

LOLOLOL

loved this!!! hehehe

I swear, it was such a weird night- but a lot of fun as it turned out. Ooh can you imagine us two? We'd be like a giggling heap in the corner 🤣

hahha! oh my eveningart! so you went there as a complete novice and drank as well as the sophisticates! How did you get there and back, did you drive?? lol.
I've never heard of anyone being petrified to go to a wine tasting before, that's hilarious!
That is too funny. I'd forgotten that you did the wine thing.
I'm surprised you didn't bring home a selection of wines, the state that you were in! Did they have anything to go with it like cheese? wine tastes so much better with food.

Haha! It was ridiculous, honestly- but a lot of fun once I'd decided to lighten up a bit! I was lucky enough that it was just a 7 minute walk away, so walked there and then... bounced / rolled home ;)

They did have bread sticks- and I was very thankful of that! It was the only thing that made the taste of that awful bubbly go away!

haha! yes a fine time was had by all! hey is this going to be a regular post feature? your monthly wine tasting adventure? lol.
the way you write, you could make it into a very popular thing!

Haha - nope, I doubt it somehow- I just don't like wine enough - I'll leave that to the experts ;)

Haha! I've never been to a wine-tasting before, though there are a couple held in my region as well as a yearly wine-and-cheese festival. I've been tempted. One day!! I don't think my visit will go as hilariously as yours though.

I'm really not much of a wine person. Ten years ago, someone I didn't really know bought me a bottle of red wine for my birthday. It was one of the worst things I had ever tasted. Apparently it was an expensive bottle. I guess the more expensive, the worse it tastes? Over the years I have found ONE wine that I like. Moscato. Fizzy white wine, relatively cheap. It was "freebie wine" at a wedding reception I went to and after my first glass I was hooked. :D

Funny you should say that about your gift bottle- I think we have about 4 bottles under the stairs- 2 red and 2 bubbly. People will insist on buying them for us as gifts, and we never drink them! (very kind and all that, but no thanks ;) )

This was my first ever tasting. It was a lot of fun when I got over the butterflies and the fact that I didn't really care what they all thought of me. I became a running joke- and that suited me fine.

Funny how you also found one wine that you really liked! Same with me from this evening... sadly it wasn't cheap, but if I fancied a glass ever, I took a photo of the bottle so I wouldn't forget which one it was!
