A wind blew in, one not native to summer.

A long sigh from the Big Dog. I feel that way tonight too. I beat back a sense of despondency a moment ago. It has no place here. Big Dog tosses and turns from his place on the cold tile. I’m sitting in a ball like how people draw mice in children’s books, my imaginary tail wrapped around me here on the couch. I feel caught in flux. I am sitting here like it is the introspective time of year, but it isn’t.

Things have been a bit off all summer. I wasn’t meant for summer this year.

I inhaled a piece of pumpkin pie earlier. It was the first of the season. I enjoyed whisking together all that velvety pumpkin, the orange color so welcome. Slippery egg yolks, deep colored from all those weeds in the backyard that make chickens happy, adding to the orange brilliance. Brown spices stirred in, sprinkled about like brown glitter. Then for the crust laid out and crimped, with the addition of little kid finger impressions throughout.

We make a lot of pumpkin pies between September and November. It is a tradition. We started early this year, because I am ushering summer out the door.

I felt chilled when I got out of the pool this evening. A wind had suddenly blown in, one not native to summer. It has been a long time since I was cold. I hate that feeling of cold entering the body—such an unhealthy feeling, but I’ll take it, to push summer on out.

Introspective time is when thoughts are made, still and cozy, by golden lamp light. Seeds saved, books laid out, dogs curled up on rugs, steaming drinks set on the coffee table. Time slows down through those long nights.

But it isn’t time yet. Summer is still here. So I’m just sitting here in flux. Zero inspiration. Just eating pumpkin pie.

It could be worse.

Tell me about it! My inspiration is gone... I mean, completely gone! I'm blank! Maybe a piece of that pumpkin pie would help me :)

Sometimes just making the pie is inspiring, but when in doubt eat it too :)

I'm full of doubts so... yeah, I'm gonna eat some slices!

Chaucer said, "Time and tide wait for no man." There's a lot going on in that simple phrase, including that we are creatures of nature and must bend to the Creator's plan. That might be a good thing. Humans have a tendency to believe they are above such nonsense. Sometimes we need reminders. Consider yourself reminded.

I'm actually really comforted by the idea that time does not wait for me. I'm always pushing it forward. Yes, it is really easy to feel above it all, until suddenly...you aren't. The seasons are great at giving that reminder.

The '70s expression "Go with the flow" comes to mind. I'm perfectly content to feel "with it" as opposed to above it all. Even if I could be above it all, that's way too much responsibility for one such as I.

A long sigh from Big Dog... yeah I know...a long sigh from me too. whiskey and pumpkin pie? is that a typical Florida breakfast? no wonder you have a headache girl! you need a cowboy hat, that's what you need.

Oh that made me laugh. Now where on earth did you get whiskey out of that. Nope, not a whisky fan. Someone did give me some roasted pecan flavored whisky though, and I can tolerate that alright. Come to think of it, with the pumpkin pie, hmmm...

hahaha! there ya go ginnyannette roasted pecan whiskey! I would try that.
"I inhaled a piece of pumpkin pie earlier. It was the first of the season. I enjoyed whisking together."
that's what I read, I just mistakenly read whisking as whiskey! honest mistake. lol. I made you laugh!

Ha! Whisking. Sounds like Texan slang for throwing back whiskey.

hey ginnyannette! haha man it sure does doesn't it?? I think you invented a cool new word! great job girl..see no matter what anyone said about you I told them that you were a genuine wordsmith! and that proves it right there!
whisking. love it. now I'm gonna have to start drinking so I can use that word. and yourself?

Never had it.Must try it . It take it it's similar to carrot cake?

You've never had pumpkin pie? It must be an American thing. I don't think it is much like carrot cake, other than a little bit of similar spice. The texture renders it not comparable. Yes, you should try it - a homemade one, made with cloves, not allspice. And with real whipped cream, ideally homemade and sweetened with maple syrup. I'm very particular :)

I might of had (ref my profile description 😂😂) but not often. My wife bakes different things every day so there is a good chance we had it but it is not a popular pie here. Sounds delicious ! 🙂🙂

Your wife and I would get along. We have baking things frequently in common.

Yeah she’s pretty talented. Here’s one she made yesterday. She even did our wedding cake 😂😂.

Wow! That's adorable! Really impressive. I do like her now for sure.

Now that it is September I can get on board with your pumpkin tradition.

Ha! Yes September does make it more appealing.
