ULOG
In eastern culture, calligraphy is a form of art that has a high tradition value, requires training and high discipline that takes a long time to successfully master it. The age of this Eastern calligraphic tradition has been centuries ago. Unlike in the West, writing by hand does not occupy such a high level in the East. The beautiful writing tradition has been surpassed by the introduction of computers early on. So the tradition of writing beautifully very few who pursue it.
Many scholars who interpret the words of the Prophet SAW about proud of this mosque as a form of decking the mosque with gold / silver carvings / calligraphy on the walls. And by some scholars made as a gesture we should not decorate the mosque with luxurious decoration.
So perhaps the takmir in the mosque where you speak is inclined to the opinion of the Hanabilah school that explicitly forbids mosque decking. Although the real context in the past is a decoration made of gold and silver.
While not made of gold and silver, it seems not too much trouble, especially when we consider the mosque of Al-Haram Makkah and Medina, where both are decorated with marble that must be very expensive. Similarly the Ka'bah al-Musyarrafah decorated with beautiful kalirafi made of gold thread and silk cloth. While most mufti and residents of Saudi Arabia are adherents of the school of Al-Hanabilah. Not sure, whether they are silent for fear or agree.
But again, this problem is indeed a difference of opinion among the scholars, both in the past and the present. We do not need to get mired in the long debate of the matter, because each has a proposition that they believe to be true.
